Small Thai & Cambodian market with good sized parking lots both in front and behind. Great place for hard to find Thai ingredients. Grab some home-made papaya salad while you're there, too.

Small secluded, hard to find Mom and Pop store located in the back of the building, mainly purveyors of gourmet foods, produce and legumes typical to the SE Asian community, small quaint store, well-known in SE Community, plenty of parking in the back of the building,

IMHO My husband was looking for specific spices and paste for a recipe he wanted to make. He'd read good things about this small Asian grocery store. It was very difficult to find this store ever since a wall was built by the landlord to close off the parking area from the formerly adjacent Harbor Freight parking area. Anyways...we eventually found the place and parked up front. Turns out there is a bigger parking lot in the back, where the store front is. From the front, the store looks very hole-in-the-wall-ish. When you enter, it is stuffed from floor to ceiling with colorful food products, and other household items. I was very impressed with the freshness and quality of the fresh vegetables. The store was cramped but clean and organized. The proprietress was very helpful when we needed to find a specific item. I'm sure we'll be back!

I love that this grocery store sells papaya salad, and affordable too! They also sell a bunch of frozen and ready to eat items. This is the place to go if you want something that a chain store wouldn't sell.

I love the papaya salad(with a bit of pieces of salted black crab)! You can get most of the ingredients needed in Southeast Asian dishes here, fresh or frozen. The place is a little tight. Free parking.Price update as of 10/14/23Papaya salad - $10/order, or $50/traySpicy level - order mild if you are sensitive to the heat. Medium level is enough heat for me.

Was on the hunt for lemon Basil to Cook a chicken noodle soup dish and the guy working the counter said usually they are in season beginning March. Also contemplated ordering some papaya salad but I think I will wait until next time to try it. The store is is a bit dingy and hole in the wall feel. But I suppose for Laos/Cambodian/Thai produce and seasoning products they will certainly suffice. Can't wait for lemon Basil season to begin !

Battambang is a small hole in the wall grocery store located in a busy area of San Jose. They have different spice levels from mild, medium to spicy and let me say... their mild is spicy AF for me. (It comes with 3 peppers but I ask for 1 and it's perfect.) The papaya salad is fresh and made to order and they take credit/cash. Would recommend and I am definitely coming back!

I go here only for the Combodian papaya salad and the fresh Thai chilies. The papaya salad is so good and spicy. I have a high spice tolerance but the normal spicy made me cry so the medium spicy is perfect for me. These folks are so friendly. The salad tastes homemade. They only take cash.

I wanted some authentic papaya salad and found some in an unexpected location in ESSJ in a family owned grocery market down the alleyway towards an apartment building. It was a tiny store with about 2 aisles that sold Asian grocery along with household items. I called in the order and it was ready in 15 minutes. Be sure to let them know the spice level because they do not play. The papaya salad ($7.00) was spicy, tangy and salty from the fermented crab. I also got the Prahok ($5.00) which goes great with steak.
