A dreadful experience. We couldn't access the car. After an hour of assistance by a Zipcar agent over the phone they couldn't rectify the issue and we were stranded without a car.

I wish I could give zero stars. This is a horrible and predatory company. I used to rent through them regularly, about $5000 annually. In September, I returned a car and another driver illegally parked in the space. I called customer service. They told me to park in another space on the street near the zip car space, and that they will take care of it. They told me to take pics of where the car was parked, a pic of the illegally parked car and its license plate. I did all of that. They ended up towing and impounding the car I rented and charged my credit card $885 for it! Then, two. months later, charged my credit card (without my permission as I canceled my account!) another $140.58 for a random parking ticket! I have been asking for a copy of this so called ticket and they are ignoring me. THEY ARE AN AWFUL COMPANY. WILL NEVER TRUST THEM EVER AGAIN.

I have been a Zipcar customer for many years and generally have had a positive experience with them until last year when things took a turn for the worse. I returned the car late and received the $50.00 late charge, which I was willing to pay, since it was my fault. On two subsequent trips I had to extend the trip by thirty minutes (you get a text within an hour of your return time, asking you if you want to extend the return time by thirty minutes by texting back "EXT 30M"). I texted 30M EXT both times. A day or two later I received an email from Zipcar, saying I had returned the car late twice and would not only be charged the $50.00 each for the supposedly late returns, but that my account was under review and I might be permanently suspended. I subsequently replied, attaching screenshots of the 30M EXT texts, proving that I had extended my trips. After back-and-forth emails and phone conversations, those $50.00 fines were deducted from my account. OK, fine. A week ago, once again, I had to extend my trip and sent the usual 30M EXT text, hoping that I wouldn't be faced with the same problem again. Not so lucky! After more emails--and including an attached screenshot, proving I had extended my trip--I still haven't been given a satisfactory explanation as to why I'm again being charged the $50.00 late fee. Plus, my account has been suspended for thirty days. On the face of it, it would seem there is an IT glitch in their texting option that needs to be fixed. So be warned, if you have to extend your trip, DON'T rely on the texting option. Call Zipcar, and keep the agent's name with whom you spoke if further problems should arise. Zipcar used to be a great company, but it was bought out a few years ago, and that's when things started going downhill. I'd say, avoid them if you can.

Absolutely terrible company. I have tried to call customer service about issues regarding charges on my account that I have received no invoices for. A manager was supposed to call me the following day to discuss these charges however, no one got back to me. I have about $1,400 of charges that no one is taking seriously, and have tried to explain away as "company policy". When I last called customer service they call center was loud, and I was barely able to hear them. Do not book with zipcar unless you want them to charge you without notice for months. I am definitely looking into legal action if my attempts to resolve this are not being taken seriously, and I want to close my account immediately.

UPDATE: ZipCar refunded the money charged for excess miles. I had date/time/GPS photos of my whereabouts. If I use ZipCar again, I will take a photo of mileage on the car. Beware if you use #Zipcar. On Saturday, Oct 7, 2023, I rented a car in San Francisco for 24 hours and drove to a wedding in Modesto (around 200 miles round trip). I returned it then got charged an extra $400 for driving 400 miles over the 180 a day allotment. I did not drive 580 miles on Saturday Still waiting for a manager to call...

I've had an overall quite negative experience with ZipCar over the course of 5 or 6 years. While it sometimes worked more or less ok, it was often stressful due to poorly maintained cars with warning lights on, a very loose bumper or fender, or the transponder dangling from adhesive failure rendering the membership card swipe impossible. Too often using ZipCar was extremely stressful due to unreachable customer service, occasions when the car wouldn't lock or wouldn't open, and an occasion when I had to end the reservation with the car still unlockable, and yet I noticed Zipcar kept the car available for rental by other members in this absurd condition. They also failed to notify me that membership cards no longer work to open the car-- I had to figure this out myself.I finally decided to cancel my membership when the app wouldn't work to keep the car doors open at the beginning of a rental despite spending a half hour with 3 different customer service reps who were unable to solve the problem. Had this happened mid-ride I could easily have been stuck 50 miles from home in a 106 degree plus parking lot with a non-working ZipCar.

Until yesterday, I would have given Zipcar 5 stars. Last year, I found the service very intuitive and affordable, and the one service hiccup (a charge for gas) was quickly resolved.I ended my membership after a few months as I was not using it. Now (10 months later) I tried to reinstate my membership. It all went smoothly until I got a yellow banner that I needed to finish my application by picking a membership; however, the link does not work - on the app or on a laptop.I called support. (They do answer the phone quickly.) I explained the problem and was told in a blandly friendly way that my issue has been accelerated and will be resolved in 3-5 business days. I have talked to three different reps and received the same response.Zipcar is worth zip if it will take up to a week to resolve.

Careful when booking cars that are EVs in locations that don't have a charger. I recently booked one and had to go find a charger and sit in a parking lot for 45 minutes before getting to my destination. The EVs are great, but if the company isn't going to charge them, thats pretty unacceptable.

I would give 0 stars if i could. I recently got a parking violation because i returned a car to the exact same location to where i picked it up. The original car i had booked had a battery issue so i was given another car which was parked in a different spot. I parked the car back exactly where i picked it up since the original booking was occupying the spot where i apparently was supposed to return it. 5 months later i get a $120 US violation charge. No warning, no email. Also, to top it off, the car was in an awful state. I'm attaching some pictures. Support is super unhelpful and won´t do anything about it. 0 stars.

My vehicle was to be in the shop for several days. A coworker suggested I try ZipCar as an alternative to booking a rental car. To my surprise, my application was rejected. After inquiring about it, I received an email with a comment "Your application was not approved for multiple reasons related to the following eligibility requirements". In checking the link there was just one item that seems to have disqualified me: Restricted licenses of any kind are not accepted. So bottom line, if you wear contacts or glasses, you are immediately ineligible to be a ZipCar customer. Seems odd that any municipality would allow a company such as ZipCar to lease out street parking when they discriminate against over 60% of the population that wears corrective lenses to drive, from having any access to their service. This review is to pay forward the time I wasted time trying to sign up with Zipcar in the first place.

Zipcar in Northridge is an absolutely horrible company. My college age daughter rented a zip car and it broke down at night on the side of the road in the middle of no where. She called the contact number for help and was told that they would send road side assistance. She waited over two hours and nobody came. They told her if she left the car she would be charged an abandonment fee. I finally stepped in and called Zipcar because her phone was about to die and I explained the situation to the customer service representative and I even spoke to the supervisor. There was no concern or urgency to help my daughter- it was after 11:00 at night and they were fine with leaving her alone on the side of the road, alone, at night. This company lacks integrity and has zero concern for their customers. After reading other reviews, it sounds like zipcar is notorious for renting cars that are in poor and unsafe condition. Don't make the same mistake we made- do not rent cars from zip car Northridge.

Zipcar is one of the most money hungry companies i have ever used. if the car is 2 mins late you will get charged $50. one time i got charged $150 in late fees because i was 2 mins late returning the car (my phone died) so in total that day i paid $198. yesterday i was 41 miles from home and my phone died, so the trip ended and when my phone turned on i called and they told me i had to pay $50 to start a new trip.....i've lost soooo much money with this company, it's very useful but the policies are so inconsiderate

I have never dealt with such a screwed up company in my entire life. I keep calling zip car and the mere act of calling causes my account to be cancelled; there is something wrong with their phone system. Now I have talked with a service rep and explained the problem, and she did not understand me. She was convinced that I wanted my account cancelled, and reassured me that she had removed my name from our account!!!!! This is nightmarish; like something out of Kafka. It is still ongoing. We have been zip car members and users for over twelve years. I can't believe this is happening.
