Yangtze is a nice, small, family-run meat and fish market. Their prices are good and their products are fresh. I've had better luck with fish at Yangtze than at nearby Manila Oriental Market. Their crabs are lively and turn over fast and they carry free-range chickens (ask for the "farm chicken"). They're also good for specialty items like beef tendon. They carry a limited range of produce too. My guess is that the staff is Chinese, but I've also seen them communicate well in Spanish.

I have always bought my meats and seafood from supermarkets and thought I might try local meat/seafood markets. I checked Yelp and decided to try Yang Tze Meat and Fish Market. I had reservations about going to the Mission because I rarely visit this district. The last time I was in this area of San Francisco was May, 2014. I met a Craigslist seller who was selling cans of R12 freon. I read that Yang Tze is between 16th and 17th streets so I drove on Valencia to 16th and turned right. This intersection is busy with cars and pedestrians. I turned right on MIssion St. and again there were cars and pedestrians. Bart is nearby and I'm guessing people were walking towards the Bart station or coming from Bart. I didn't see the market and I couldn't find a parking space so I turned right on 17th St. There were a few metered parking spaces available so I was able to park without much difficulty. I walked along MIssion St. looking for Yang Tze and the smell of urine was everywhere. I came across a homeless guy sleeping on a mattress right on the sidewalk. I was beginning to regret coming to the Mission but I continued on. I found Yang Tze and saw only one customer. I looked for T-bone steaks but there were none. I asked one of the butchers cutting meat if they had some and he said they did and how much I wanted. He told me he would cut the T-bone steaks after he was finished with the order he was working on. Several minutes later, an older Asian man walked in and the butcher put all the meat he had cut up in a bag and gave it to him. The butcher told me he was ready to cut my T-bone steaks and I told him to cut two and make them about 1 lb each. I also had him cut a 1 inch slice of salmon. The prices were cheaper than what I pay at the supermarkets and the steaks tasted great. The market wasn't busy at 11:30 am with a total of five customers only buying meat and seafood. The prices of their meat and seafood is lower than the supermarkets. The employees are efficient and friendly. However, Yang Tze is in a bad location and I would not go there when it is dark. I suspect that behavior and activities that might be considered aberrant and abhorrent to most people are common and typical in this part of San Francisco. I am going to try other meat markets but I will also return to Yang Tze.
