This place is pathetic! I'm moving out from this place. First, the doctors are always behind. Every appointment, expect to wait for 40-50 mins. Yet, you get late one time from your multiple on time appointments that you had, they'll ask you to leave, even though the doctor is about 30 mins behind. The people in the front are so jaded that they don't know how to show compassion for the sick people. They are like robots, especially the Chinese Asian lady in the front, she belongs to work at DMV! This place doesn't even deserve a 1 star. Zero negative star! Don't go here! It's pathetic!

The waiting list to get an experienced MD here, for a PCP, is a YEAR or more. There are several residents-MDs in their 1st or 2nd year of residency, though, but who's accepting new patients for PCP is elusive. Also the staff here avoids knowing anything about the UCSF lab facility a few steps away, contrary to common sense. Parking is tough, even with a placard. In a word, this is not a good example of a primary care facility, nor a great place for primary care. As with much of UCSF, the MD-clinicians are good, but the staff are decidedly not well-trained in essential systems: communications, scheduling, or health insurance basics, or business-operations of any kind... Recommended that prospective patients go to the larger primary-care enterpriises in SF, especially CPMC/Suttter. (I've been a full-time caregiver for a disabled patient trying to get care at UCSF for much of the last 12 years...be aware, it too a YEAR+ just to get the POA in the system, such as it is. My many complaints over the years about the poor state of UCSF IT and databases especially, have all been ignored.)

All that this place does is generate referrals for specialists. That sentence is standing alone because it really is all you need to know. There is no coordination of care, problem solving or "primary care". One simple example. I had a small infection that was on my lower belly. Even THAT required a referral to a specialist with a 6 month wait. The end result is that I have a huge scar for something that just needed a week long dose of your basic antibiotics. I have named the scar that remains after the doctor there who I hope to never see again.

Wait time is over 45 minutes, every time, to talk to your doctor. I am always 10 mins early to be respectful of their time, but clearly the patients time doesn't matter. The intake staff will call me 15 minutes after the appointment time has passed, just to verify what I just verified on mychart? If there is a health problem, the doctor will just "refer" out instead of trying to dig deeper and figure it out. The "referrals" never go anywhere and even after follow up you will not hear from anybody that you were referred to. As a healthcare professional, this is very poor care - despite the doctors nice demeanor... I am currently searching for a new provider.

Just do yourself a favor and avoid this facility. UCSF is overhyped in general. Try Sutter or Stanford instead. I've had a much better level of care and service with their docs and facilities.

Wonderful staff. Note COVID QRC verification is located on the window not near the sign on the door.

As a patient at the Parnassus office who wanted to transfer to the Lakeshore office, I cannot recommend this medical facility to the public. They have gone out of their way to prove to me that I do not matter to them, and that money is their only concern. They have treated me with blatant disregard from the moment I became a patient with UCSF several years ago. Their behavior is highly unprofessional and they seem to be engaging in price gouging and justifying it with the absurd excuse that they are a research institution. I believe they should be sanctioned for their behavior and certainly should have their public funding cut or pulled completely as they only seem to be serving themselves at this point.

My continued experience here has been really good. I now see a new PCP who is thoughtful and caring and goes above and beyond for her patients. There is still the aspect of parking and the admin is still iffy at times but overall it's improved. I hope my experience going forward improves in all areas and one day I will update my review to show a 5 star rating. For now I feel 4 is appropriate.

If it was possible to give this place 0 stars I would do so in a heartbeat. The front desk is fine despite the reviews saying otherwise. I can only speak for my own experience so here goes: As a cancer survivor when you go into the office saying you have pain in one of your breasts and that you can feel a lump, I would think that would be enough to have a doctor say "oh you have symptoms now and also have a past history of this disease? Let me go ahead and order you a mammogram and mark it as stat, let's order blood work, oh and here's a referral for a doctor that specializes in this stuff in the event that they know more than me." What I was told: "I don't think this is malignant." Here's a bill for $375.00 They only decided to give me a scan AFTER I yelled at their receptionist. Like, this is basic medical crap? If you don't know the answer refer the patient to someone who does??? I'm still trying to have the insurance company fight this because it's insanely ridiculous that they treat cancer patients like garbage here. We have as much right as everyone else to actually be taken seriously for our medical issues as the rest of you. And you would think that this is a one time case scenario of, well maybe you just had a bad doctor. Wrong! I've also been up here for over a year trying to get care in seeing an after care doctor for the followup of what happens when you have cancer diagnosis. I've lost track of how many instances we're on now, but essentially they claimed they would send over orders for a breast scan and mark it as urgent. They reassured me that they sent it over and the soonest they'd be able to see me was in a few months time. Turns out they never did. I escalated this to the manager of the facility who informed me that nobody sent it over, and when I asked, "So they lied to me?" She basically confirmed that. I was told time and time again from southern California doctors that UCSF is supposedly "the very best" when it comes to cancer care, and I quite frankly have yet to see that. Fast forward a year and I was able to get a scan ordered within a week of establishing care OUTSIDE of UCSF, and was able to establish care with the type of doctor I needed. It's really sad that UCSF chooses to treat cancer survivors this way. I will never go back to this clinic ever.

Absolutely terrible experience with 2 doctors here. However, the people working the check-in desk are polite, smiling, and helpful. For both visits I arrived 10 minutes early. I picked this clinic because I have a physical handicap and was thrilled to find a large parking lot because for me that means less pain from walking that increases throughout the day. My first visit was with Dr. Florio who is also leaving the clinic within a month. I have complex health issues that involve chronic widespread pain, chronic neuropathy particularly in my hands and feet, raynauds syndrome which makes the neuropathy worse, and chronic fatigue (not to mention everything else). So, I was really looking for help. I also reached the end of allowable temporary handicap placards and needed a blue placard. Dr. Florio did my intake and I already spoke with my insurance about continuing aquatherapy because my physical therapist discovered this was the only way to get me out of a 3 day flare up cycle after each session. When I asked about it my response was "we don't do that." Neither did SF general, but both the pain clinic there and my p.t. sent requests to initiate a 6 week program with Laguna Honda. Also, I did not get any advice or suggestions. After going over my current symptoms and diagnosis her response was "what do you want from me." So, I asked to see visit their pain clinic (which was horrible) and I asked for an integrative medicine approach because I had reactions to medicines that caused severe depression, or severe memory loss with about a 10-20 minute span, and one that caused heart palpitations. She did write the referrals, which is good. This clinic has a limited time for appointments, so she left before I finished and said to make an appointment in three months. The person who took my blood pressure returned and I let her know I did not have time to resolve the placard. She said she would let Dr. Florio know, and no one followed up so a week later I called both about the placard and a conversation with my insurer regarding aquatherapy. It was suggested I send a message through the portal with some details. I did not get a response about aquatherapy, and the response about a placard was "I don't make the rules, the DMV does." Not helpful, and not even inquisitive. The irony is the check-in people here, helped my with the form and were very understanding on my struggle to find a spot on my foot to take steps. My doctor did not care. So, I thought this might be a sub-par experience because she planned to leave in a month. So, a few weeks later I scheduled with Dr. Strelkoff as a PCP because her profile listed chronic illness as an interest. The first words she said to me were " you have 20 minutes" and the last words said were "on to the next patient." I felt this doctor was more trainee focused than patient focused, and was much worse than Dr. Florio. Once again, the check-in folks were helpful, helped me with forms because my hands were also flaring up rapidly, and expressed concern. Since I have not been getting the best help from some doctors (not all), which is common from what I hear from members of my support group, I started reading a bit from a guide to help establish a relationship with a doctor and how to provide the doctor with information that will help them succeed. My experience with Dr.Strelkoff was like conversing with a brick wall. I asked for advice on internal vs topical magnesium supplements. Zero appropriate response, and " there is no prescription for that." A previous PC in a different network prescribed vitamin B and iron, and they were both covered by my insurance, so I know she was simply not being helpful. People with my health condition have difficulty with vitamin levels either due to absorption issues due to a specific symptom, or due to the body burning through nutrients rapidly. I told her that both the neurology department and the pain clinic said my PCP would do the paperwork for my blue placard, and her response was "I

I was a new patient so I called and spoke to someone on the phone. He told me that they weren't accepting new patients until June and apologized. Nice guy, frustrating situation. I had a medical matter to attend to and no primary so I went in person a month or so after and the receptionist said the same thing, no new appointments until June. This time she gave me a number for new patients and recommended I go to urgent are. First of all, why didn't the first person I spoke to give me the new patient phone number? Second, the second receptionist gave me the wrong info regarding which urgent cares to go to. She told me any was fine, even though I asked specifically about sf health plan as it relates to being in their medical network (UCSF Lakeshore). If someone does not know the info, they should just say it and not lead me to the wrong path. I didn't believe the info I was given so I double checked with SF Health Plan and if I didn't I would've been unnecessarily charged if I went to any of the urgent cares that the receptionist recommended. That was a rant, but the point I want to convey here is that this location and all medical provider offices should train receptionists/staff in the front to familiarize themselves with SF Health Plan and all have the same info to give to new patients. What if my health literacy was far below average? I can't fathom the thought of how many others need assistance getting a primary health provider and are led astray or do not have support.

August 2018: So when our daughter was born at UCSF we were going to the laurel village practice but decided we lived closer to lakeshore and would give it a try instead. I made arrangements to continue her care there after leaving the hospital. Went to the first days visit and saw an Asian doctor. She was perfectly nice but not really engaged. We thought it must have been because were were not going to be assigned to her, she was only seeing us this one time, so moved on. Went in for the second required visit and saw Tomlin. She seemed like the type of doctor that likes to tell you what to do and isn't really interested in coming up with care plans together. I knew this wasn't a good fit for us so for the one month check up, I requested to see the only other doctor that was receiving new patients, Florio. For the one month check up, brace yourself, it gets ugly: - I show up only to be informed that my daughter was not fully added to my insurance yet so they could not see her. - she was one month old, due for a well child check which is free to parents anyway on my insurance plan, and needed vaccinations. - I told the admin staff that we had been patients of UCSF for years, my other child was fully insured and that I was a city employee who was still employed, I even gave them my benefits contact at HR so they could verify that I was employed and that I had filed all the paperwork to add her to my plan appropriately and on time. We had proof! - I also told them, that because I knew my insurance would cover her, I had no problem being "billed" for the visit and I would sort it with the insurance myself since I had documented proof that she was added on time. The response: was that none of that was good enough, and without paying $300+ dollars right there ON THE SPOT, she would not be seen! I was mortified, appalled, and upset. I couldn't believe this was happening since all my years at UCSF had been so amazing before that at the laurel village and China basin clinics. With my one month old baby in my arms, I was rejected unless I could pay. No matter my history, no matter my HR contact on the line trying to tell them everything was fine. I left in tears and so disappointed with "our new home, Our new clinic" that I would have NEVER gone back. I even asked to speak with Dr. Florio because she came referred by a relative. I wanted to personally touch base with her as to why we were not going to see her that day. She refused to even come out, and her nurse came out instead to tell us she was busy (during our scheduled appointment time mind you). I knew then she was not a good fit for us either since I expect to have the physician who sees my kids to, idk, care about people... The admin team at this clinic seems like they don't follow the same standards the other clinics do. I think they are a high traffic clinic and therefore make up their own rules because they can. Or perhaps they are just less empathetic than the other clinics. All I know is that I had no intention of going back and would literally drive across town to another clinic to avoid going there again.

This is THE BEST clinic I have been to. They have been impressing me since day one, when I came in to establish a PCP. The wait is literally less than a minute the first time I was there. The lady who checked me in was friendly, courteous and professional. Within 5 minutes after I registered, I was called in by medical assistant Cynthia who helped me with the same level of amazing service. Dr. Wan came in at my exact appointment time, which never happened to me before with other any medical institutions (including Seton, Kaiser...). She was warm, friendly and welcoming. I instantly feel very comfortable and trusting of her. Not only she came prepared by knowing all my medical records, she took the time to listen to me and understand my concerns. I don't feel being rushed at all. She ordered my blood test for me and I was immediately helped by the technician next door at the lab. I always have a hard time getting my blood drawn since I have tiny veins (according to many nurses who drew my blood before). This technician was able to do that with one try The whole expierence was pleasant, easy and very welcoming. I am so happy I finally found a doctor and clinic that works for me!!
