Small and intimate, an old theater with lots of character

Got $31 TodayTix to the 2pm matinee of Evita today - only saw the movie and was curious about the play - though in a small venue in the upper floors of a hotel right off Union Square - it was an easy walk from BART Powell station and worth the effort - talented small cast - with a pretty minimalistic set. The seats we got all the way in the back of the upstairs balcony were pretty cramped - but it was not overly crowded so we. Able to spread out a little. Also took advantage of the chance to walk around the area which was surprisingly cleaner and had more foot traffic than I expected form how desolate the retails spaces are - especially down Powell - the city needs to really step it up and put a night market or street fair booths from other city vendors or something to liven up these streets or I fear there will be an even longer time to recovery - seems the Prima Dona landlords here must not want to face reality and lower rents to get businesses in there ASAP.
But I digress - theater is convenient and worth supporting - at least the the discounted rates

Saw Evita this week and we were extremely pleased at how much we enjoyed it. The acting was terrific, the singing voices professional, costumes, fab, and the whole audience was enthralled.
Shout-out to Che who may have been better than Mandy!

The play was funny. But the view in the balcony is poor if your in the back rows. The play was mostly staged in front of stage. First two rows blocked the view. People in back were constantly moving around in their seats to see around the first two rows thus blocking people behind them who then those people were blocking people behind them and so on.

We saw the 39 Steps. The show was very cleverly done. It was funny and we enjoyed it. We were in the 4th row, so nice to be up close to the actors. But the theatre is not large, so any seat is a good seat. We have seen several shows at SF Playhouse and have enjoyed them. They do a great job with the scenery and sets.

Wow! Always a wonderful performance from this theater company. "39 Steps" was a fun and intriguing take on this Alfred Hitchcock classic.
