I will not be sacreligious, the assignment of rating of a Catholic church is tacky. I will say is that a church is the community, it is made of and cared for by the congregation and the Diocese. The donations of patrons and benefactors is also important to keep a historical church alive and upkept. The Spirit is always there but it takes a devout community for it to thrive. I went on a guided tour with a local that discussed his personal journey on the streets of the Tenderloin, recovery, and homelessness as long time citizen of the neighborhood. He took a group of us employed in the area but interested to learn more about the community, so we visited St. Boniface. Our company already spearheads volunteer opportunities in the area and we paid a donation to get the history and spend time with this local. When I opened the door to the church I could not believe what I was seeing. It was a page torn from a story from science fiction. The air was heavy and stale, the large pedestal of Holy water to baptize was filthy with dirty water and trash. It appeared that people used it to actually wash from. It was dark, very dark with the orange flicker of candles. The pews were filled with people lying about, coughing, many shooting up, and the faces...the faces of the living dead every so often turning our direction to see. It was sad, so very very sad. All these people, one could only presume the Church that once celebrated a faith had now become a refuge to those with no where to go, no reverence or comprehension of what a church can be. I left absolutely disheartened that this is the reality of the community today. Perhaps now in Covid it is worse. If you are only looking at architecture, you miss the point, but if you want to help build community, St. Boniface is deserved of a chance to be great.

There's a particular Friar who I call "Brother D" who has been a counselor, guide, spiritual guide and friend since I was a homeless addict and has become what I would consider a true friend since I got my apartment in 2018. This is one of those "Only in San Francisco" places that make this City a truely special place.

We attended Mass on Sunday morning, the church is beautiful, the people are welcoming, spiritual and family oriented.
