Mary has got to be one of the most talented and creative seamstresses I've personally ever met. If you stop in to say hi to her, you'll see a succession of friends and happy clients say hello as they walk by. It's hard not to stop and chat for just a minute, and check on what she's working on at the moment. I've seen everything from a custom gown, reminiscent of the form and structure of a Mcqueen jacket, to a psychedelic jumpsuit made for summer and in honor of her love of roller skating.As for the shop, it's truly a gem and an institution in San Francisco, and a light on the corner of Treat and 24th. Imagine a small atelier, a living representation of the old heart of the Mission. This female owned small business is worth supporting for so many reasons <3** Don't forget to ask if she has any new plants up for adoption, there is always something good around! Suggested donation for the plants is really reasonable too.

Despite just celebrating it's 10 year anniversary, this shop truly feels like a hold-over from an older, more relaxed part of San Francisco, located in the deep heart of the Mission District. The owner, Mary, makes what she pleases for the front of the shop - currently on offer are new swim suits and flowly, psychedelic jumpsuits perfect for rollerskating down at Ocean Beach or in Golden Gate Park. If you need something tailored or custom made she can do this too, and there just isn't anyone better. Each piece will fit you well once she gets her hands on it, as she has such a good understanding of how fabric should flow and specifically how to put something technical together. The shop is also a community hub, adding to the vibrancy of the 24th St. corridor. Hard to imagine SF without this gem of a shop!

Praxis is a Mission gem! Wanna get something custom tailored, especially if it involves creative styles and interesting materials...look no further! In addition, if you are interested in learning something new like sewing or operating a loom (yeah how many other places have you seem a loom??), they offer classes. I have never sewn and signed up for an intro class. Mary is a great instructor. She is patient, knowledgeable and encouraging. I walked in never having operated a sewing machine before, and walked out with 2 super cool masks. Praxis is also very community oriented, so that’s all the more reason to pay them a visit. Check ‘em out and get your creative juices flowing.

Praxis is an artist collective & community space located in the heart of the Mission. Everything in the shop is handmade locally. The space is both a working studio & store front. They do their best to be here as the space is usually open seven days a week yet sometimes they need to take their time work in quiet or do other errands. They do sewing or stitching projects. Making unique clothing from a variety of materials. They also sell plants at a reasonable price. Friendly folks here & good vibes that are rare in the City! oh man. i can't say enough good things about Praxis and the people who run it. All of their clothes are handmade in the shop, and they sell products made by local artisans, including accessories and body care products. It's a wonderland! Also, if you need a custom anything made, ANYTHING, this is where you need to go. Mary at Praxis made my wedding dress. It was a dream. Everything I could have asked for, including (!!) secret pockets. How cool is that?

I love Praxis! They can do anything. They mend clothes, make personal costumes, provide sewing lessons, have the cutest handmade dresses/clothes, make blankets for the homeless, provide a space for locally made jewelry and fashion goods, they order/make natural body care products, they're always playing great music and they love talking about social change and community empowerment.
