These are MY peeps we're talkin' 'bout here. Don't you be talkin' no smack 'round here 'bout my peeps. It was actually Jamie W. who got me to come here for their Community Kitchen event. Several of us (and not all Japanese-Americans) came, and we were organized into teams to make delish country-style Japanese dishes. I was on the Fruit Sando team, and people were impressed with my whipped cream whisking capabilities.I didn't watch the Food Network for years for nothing. But the center is more than just food. It aims to preserve and promote all aspects of Japanese/Japanese-American cultural heritage, and their calendar of events reflects their charter. At a time when a tragedy like the Monterey Park shootings can occur without provocation, it's more important than ever to have a community-based non-profit organization like this in Japantown.RELATED - Exploring Japantown? Love the JCCCNC for all the programming and events they have. One event I try not to miss is their quarterly Community Kitchen where the participants help to make all the dishes of a meal and then sit together and dine. It's always a fun time and it's wonderful to meet new people who have something in common... the love of trying new foods! Today's menu included Miso Ozoni Soup, Japanese Tofu and Hamburger Meatloaf, Garlic and Shoyu Snow Peas, Azuki Rice, and Azuki Milk Popsicles. Everyone can choose whichever dish they want to help create and after it's all cooked, it's time to sit and dine together. Each Community Kitchen is a different menu and each dish has a lead person who helps guide the participants, but they've not necessarily made the dish before, so it's everyone helping each other. It's a wonderful experience... so much fun! This is just one of the events at the Center; there are so many from which to choose. This event is good for all ages, children included! It's not just the Japanese community that participates; the participants are very diverse and come from all walks of life. Come with a friend or come alone and make new friends! Check out their schedule and join us for the next one!
