Bank of the West and it's brokerage subsidiary BWIS was recently purchased by Bank of Montréal BMO. Before retiring during the pandemic, I worked here briefly. I am also a bank customer as well. I found the staff to be a caring hard working bunch. But the Bank's antiquated systems are in desperate need of an upgrade. Something which I hope B'Mo can provide. The employees are Five Stars, but getting things done can require a little too much effort. I encourage you to read some of the other 185 reviews.

This is the second time I visit this Branch with an extremely simple request and both times I was redirected to call a phone number. If physical offices still exist is for people who, like myself, still prefer to talk to a Banker in person. Even though the employees are nice (that’s why I didn’t give just one star), if they can’t help with simple requests then why do they even have a physical office in the first place. On the flip side, the other Branches I visited in Daly City and the one near Castro, they have very knowledgeable and helpful professionals that were able to help me solve the exact same questions I made at this Downtown location. We already pay a lot of fees to Banks so at the very least they should provide a service that makes your life easier

Jaime Vang was absolutely the best bank employee I have encountered in 45 yrs. She is in the Stockton Branch and was extremely efficient and helpful!

I called customer service today to ask what my interest saving payment amount this month was and the CSR didn't know what I was talking about. I asked to speak with her supervisor and I spoke with a supervisor named Michelle and she also didn't know what I was talking about either. I explained to Michelle that I wanted to know how much I needed to pay on the due date to avoid interest. She said all of it. This is not correct since I have a portion of the balance on a 0% APR for 18 months. This makes me feel like she didn't even look into my account. I explain the APR situation and asked if she could crunch the numbers for me. She said she didn't know what numbers I wanted to crunch. I'm astonished my the lack of knowledge in the Bank of the West call center. I am also astonished about the lack of care from the employees. Bank of the West/BMO has a customer service department purely for show. I'm supposed to hear from a manager on my small request now. Hopefully the request was actually submitted. I have little faith. I do not recommend Bank of the West/BMO. Take your money elsewhere.

As you can see by the total 1.5 star rating for Bank of the West, they are a troubled institution. They operate as a predatory lender. Be very careful. My father was convinced to take out an interest only loan, 15 years ago on his death bed. Father passed 4 months later. My brother took over the loan as it was for a business. My brother has since passed. The business closed. Now Bank of the West is attacking my mother who has dementia, who is 89 years old and nothing to do with the loan. Interest only for 15 years Bank of the West had no intention of ever collecting principal. Scare tactics on the elderly disabled citizens is never acceptable

Customer Service needs training. Today I activated my new debit card that came in the mail. An hour later went to car wash and tried to use my new card to pull money out to tip the car wash people. Denied. called bank they said they took the hold off. tried again to get my money. Denied. Called bank again, was told it takes a couple of hours to activate the new card. Was told again that the hold was off. Denied. called a third time and was told that my card was locked that I locked my card. was on hold for a supervisor for over 32 minutes. Supervisor told me the only way to unlock my card was to go on my account and take my lock off that I must have put on. I had never even locked or unlocked my card, but they insisted it was my fault. I had to end up buying the car wash people Gatorade's on my credit card that I had also just activated that morning the same time as my debit card, my credit card is with Citibank and they were able to activate it right away. well, the two Customerservice people that I spoke to in the beginning were very nice and well mannered they haven't been trained to find out what the real problem was and they just wanted to get me off the phone waiting for the supervisor for over 32 minutes was ridiculous and the supervisor was very point-blank. I wouldn't even say cordial, point-blank and just listened and gave a half hearted apology and just got me off the phone. I really feel that Customerservice at Bank of the West has really gone down in the last couple of years and that they are not helpful in a time of need, if I could give them less than one star, I most definitely would.

I had a PayPal account connected to B of W. We saw the money go in online. The next day the same account was empty! When we called to inquire we were told the account had been shut down and tge just forgot to mention it and forgot to remove the account from our online banking portal. When we went to our branch in Santa Barbara the manager tried to gaslight us and insisted that it must have had a negative balance! Then he tried to convince us that a letter was sent but we missed it. In the end, we got our money but as I can see by the ratings here the poor treatment of their clients is very consistent. Management is just horrible!

Had an account at the Oregon City branch for several years and witnessed its steady decline. New employees/managers every few weeks and really bad customer service. Closed my accounts a couple of months ago; should have done it sooner.

On May 20 I visited the main branch of Bank of the West in Pasadena. I had rolled coins to exchange for cash. I was told by the bank manager they were not set up to receive coins today. I asked if I could deposit this into my account and was told no. All of the Banking problems in the in this world and Bank of the west would not accept money. Here is my response I have been with this bank for 30 years, if this happens again all my three account will be closed.

They allowed 2 hackers to take money out of my account after being told to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity. The next day the hackers wiped out my entire account , and left a big bill owing. And then after I made the claim and it was approved they acted like it was my fault, and dragged their feet on paying me. So, a week later I called to find out when my check would be mailed, only to be lied to, and told it would be mailed to my address only 3 days later. So I called the local branch and they said it would not arrive for almost 30 days. Bank elsewhere!!!!!!

Online experience and back-end tech are a nightmare. Security is was too tight and locks me out of my own account all the time, and customer service is abhorent. When I share my feed-back it never goes anywhere. currently in Mexico and their 800 #'s will not accept "international" calls. Been trying to stick with them because of their "green" investing, but it is just not worth it anymore. Can't wait to be done with this company.

They SUCK and in my opinion are thieves. They cashed someone else's check out of my account and made me go through a claims process to recover MY MONEY. It could take up to 10 days and they will not pay any expenses resulting from my not having access to MY MONEY taken out of my account by THEIR error. It is the first of the month mortgage is due and if there is late fees or penalties William ID #WG8909, he refused to give his last name, communicated that the bank would not be responsible and would not compensate me for any late fee or penalties assessed by my creditors and I would need to ask my creditors to reverse them or pay them on my own. How in this age of electronic everything can they not just put the money they stole from my account back immediately. Needless to say, this money, once it is returned, and all the money in my other 3 accounts with will have a new home.

Do not use this bank. Their security is terrible. I have had so many false charges on my account because their security is so bad. Each time, I have had to cancel my ATM debit/credit card, order a new one which takes 14 days.
