DCS is very well-run. They have a large parking lot and small garage that together can be an event venue. I attended DeaFestival here on 9/30/2023 for the first time ever and thoroughly enjoyed it ? Booths were all through the middle aisles and not only out on the perimeter. Interpreters were available at booths where the workers didn’t sign. I will gladly attend DeaFestival here again.

I have been asking for MONTHS for the paperwork to attend trucking school. I I informed them that I was unemployed, needed income to eat and to pay my rent. A dire situation I would think. I have been emailing them for MONTHS TO GET THIS PAPERWORK. At first they said they sent it and after informing them that I had not received it, I have sent emails over and over over to try and get someone to put the paperwork in an envelope and mail it to me. The last message I got was "It's Memorial Day weekend, she will get back to after the weekend." Based on past experience, she will not get back to me. It's Friday. When I was working, I had to work on Friday. All I get from them are excuses, excuses, excuses. This is a terribly run organization. I personally, have NEVER gotten any help from them when asked. I remember when I was working with them to get employment after losing my hearing and I told them I was looking for a job with a minimum of 60k, the workers boss told me "That's more than I make." What, I'm not allowed to have a decent job because it's more than you make? Demotivating to say the least. This is the problem with Federally or State funded programs. It turns people into paper shufflers plain and simple.

Continued review: We get in the car and I tell him he isn't in trouble and I want to know what happened. I asked him if he brushed his teeth everyday, he said no. I said okay did you shower everyday? He said no. I asked him if he changed everyday, he also said no. I showed him the shirt he was wearing and asked if he wore it Monday, yes. I asked if he wore it Tuesday. He said yes. He said Wednesday too. I said what about Thursday? He said yes but he changed that afternoon and didn't change today because he went swimming. I also asked him if anyone told him to change his dirty clothes or made him shower and he said no. I also asked him why he just didn't change on his own and he said he didn't know. I know some kids won't do it on their own and need guidance and I figured that's what the camp leaders would be able to do but apparently I was wrong. Having proper hygiene is an essential thing in our and these kids' lives. I don't understand why they wouldn't guide/enforce them to do it everyday. I get there are many kids to care for there at the camp and not many leaders and they can't be on MY son every second of the day. But since they only have 7-8 kids to each leader I don't understand how my son could have fallen through the cracks. And who knows there may be other kids that weren't being guided to change or shower either. I just know about my son. We get home and I open his duffel bag. I found fleas and bed bugs jumping around in his bag and on his clothes, shirts were all folded mind you. Proof again that they had not been touched like they claimed. His 6 pair of socks were still neatly together like I had packed them. There was one pair of jeans that had been thrown in and not folded. I assumed because that was what he had been wearing for the day. His underwear wear also untouched. I threw everything in that bag away, as well as the sleeping bag and blanket (including the duffel bag) because I did not want to bring that into our home and spread it even further. I had him strip down to his underwear outside so I could throw all he had on away. His underwear looked as I expected. WORN OUT! What i saw on his little body is unbelievable. He had BED BUG bites all over! His neck, his back, his abdomen, his legs and arms. My poor son said that he couldn't sleep because they itched him so bad. I had never seen anything like that before. I am very disappointed in the way my son was taken care of at DYLC this year. Needless to say he will not be returning next year. And shame on you all at Youth and Family Services of DCS-San Diego for not returning one message back to even tell me that it would be looked into.
