My ninth grade daughter still talks about how much she learned at Birney Elementary. She particularly holds great memories from 4th grade and Mr. O'Malley is the teacher she will remember for life. Ms. Amanda, Principal, is very approachable and has a steel trap memory of details from conversations. She knows everyone's name and story and cares for each student. She is someone who knows how to make a lot of good things happen!

I went to this school to pick up my nephew from school one day. When I got to the office the staff had a very rude bitchy attitude towards me and my wife. The African American lady in the office was not only rude to us but to a mail carrier who happened to walk in to drop off mail. After she gave me the slip to get my nephew I was walking around campus looking for my nephews room with my dog that I had in my arms, it was too hot to leave her in the car. Suddenly this lady comes up to me and starts yelling at me and scolding me that dogs were not allowed on campus. Although no one in the office told me anything when I walked in with my dog in my arms as I signed my nephew out. She told me that it was agains school policy. I tried to explain to her that it was too hot to leave her in the car. She kept talking over me and raising her voice more and more. At this point I was extremely angry that this lady started scolding me out of no where and was rude and very unprofessional. When she noticed that I was getting upset with the way she was speaking to me she suddenly changed her tone and introduced herself as Amanda the principle. I was in complete shock that this woman was the principle of the school. She was extremely rude and aggressive. She should've introduced herself first, her approach was very hostile and unprofessional. I can't believe this is how she talks to parents or family members of the students. No wonder her staff is rude and have poor attitudes. She sets a bad example for the entire staff. She should not be in a position of power anywhere. What a horrible rude woman. Do us all a favor and quit. The staff deserve better, the students deserve better and so do the families of the students enrolled. Get rid of her!

The school garden and education center is beautiful and thriving. I was fortunate enough to be given a tour by a parent and by Mindy, the steward of this garden. Birney Elementary School is doing a great job in supporting this critical area of education. They are an excellent example of how public schools can successfully implement gardens. This is a place of study, therapy, and wonder. Keep up the good work. I wish that our local public school had this asset. Bravo!

Happy parent of two Birney Bees and cannot say enough good things about the amazing community of parents and staff here. In this time of strife especially, this school really lives the IB idea of "other people, with their differences, may also be right." Some standouts are: 1. Free Lunch and Breakfast for all students 2. School orgs help raise money to pay for free art, music, garden and Spanish classes for all kids 3. Amazing principal, Ms. Amanda, is out greeting parents and kids every day - very on it and approachable 4. Excellent math and english scores, especially impressive given the wide diversity at the school and how low they were only 10 years ago 5. Diversity - these kids and families speak so many other languages, know so many other cultures, it's really a wonderful global perspective and kids are taught to respect and celebrate their differences It's a bit worn around the edges and there's no new shiny science lab or pool, but the community they have built and values they help teach far outweigh the downsides for me.

The field/track is open to the public on nights/weekends. I love running the track here. Many people even bring their dogs, although though they are not technically allowed off-leash here.
