I would never step foot in this shop again. Several years ago, I was looking for some high-end framing for several original travel posters from the 1920s-1940s that had been carefully restored. I wanted nothing fancy, but needed conservation-quality framing to protect against sun damage, acid in mounting materials, etc.I walked in with a ton of business to give, and instead of helping me, I got a ton of attitude from the person (owner?) who had a superiority complex. First, there is nothing more there than plain black or plain white frames. Maybe natural wood color, but don't quote me on that. When I asked about any other frame colors or styles than just black or white, I got a long snarky lecture about how they frame for museums and how what they offer is all anyone should need. The message was that I should basically be grateful I was standing there being considered for work that was not-at-all important to them. Not only that, but the work time-frame was really nothing I had any input on, and if I wanted to work with them, I'd better decide fast, as they had other (better) things to do.Nope. No thanks. They don't need my money...they've got their ego to keep them warm.

The owner took our sizable deposit to frame a painting and now will not return our calls or voicemails. Do not engage with this business.

They require an appointment. I made one, and was reminded of it via email, and yet when I went at my time slot no one was there. No answer via phone or email.

Smith Andersen north is by far the very best place in the entire Bay Area for the highest quality and knowledge associated to picture framing and all the archival needs. I highly recommend to go to them first!!

I have visited this gallery a few times for exhibitions. The current show, Unai San Martin's delicate photogravures, is stunning. This gallery is not afraid to show black and white work. I will return.

Smith Andersen North is a breath of fresh air with an artistic soul. Not only does Stefan Kirkeby and his crew do beautiful frames that are sensitive to the art that they are preserving but the exhibitions within the space present a creative gift to the community. Bravo.
