Alan Steel been my go-to since Metal Supermarket Hayward closed. Prices are reasonable. Reason for 3 stars is their hours. For a company that services the DIY / part time fabricator community their hours are not very friendly. No fridays, no weekends. The only way for me to get down there is if I call in sick or use my vacation hours.

I’ve been going to Alan still for years. They always have what I need with aluminum tubing, bar, and plate stock.

Very happy with my purchase. Ordered H-Beams to make a soldier pile retaining wall over the phone, and 3 hours later my contractors were able to pick up the order cut to size. Great service.

Another customer asked me to help him carry his metal to his truck. Apparently they though I was stealing metal. I checked the receipt for my purchase and I was overcharged by $30.00. I discovered they did not ask me for an explanation, they just went ahead overcharged me for the metal I carried out for the other customer. I have been a good customer for over 35 year, they should have asked me about the metal we might have even had time to get the other person before he left the yard . I'm so upset I have not been back for several months now.

I'm over 70 years old and retired. I've bought metal here since I was in High School taking Sequoia High Metal Shop with Mr Herzing. Alway had what I needed and always friendly and helpful. Just picked up a piece of brass today to weight down a sewing project my wife is making.

As the name implies, it's mostly steel, endless tons of one kind after another. The warehouse with the office additionally has bins and bins of nuts and bolts and more exotic hardware, and non-steel sheets; the other is more steel, with their more modest selection of non-steel stock, and the bandsaw. They'll cut stuff for you, for a fee, though I'm not sure how much that is. My only quibble is that they don't have prices listed: to determine cost you have to bring your piece or its description to the office, where a person will calculate it--presumably by weight? I dunno. I assume it's cheaper than other places, given the steady stream of contractors. Other shops here don't have the non-ferrous selection needed by my hobbyist machine tools, but also it's just *fun*: years ago I encountered an enormous 3ft long turnbuckle! So this is my go-to, especially for longer or wider stock that people will ship cheaply on eBay.
