About Potato Chip Rock
Potato Chip Rock is a potato chip shaped stone on top of a hill, accessed through a hiking route. There are two main ways to get there: one from Poway Lake, which is about 8 miles round trip, and a shorter, paved trail from the highway. Parking is convenient and free at the fire station next to the road, while Poway Lake has paid parking on weekends and restrooms available. The trail is a smooth, well-maintained concrete path that steadily climbs uphill. It is a tough hike with a medium to high degree of difficulty due to the steep slope, offering a great workout and challenge for tight calves and thighs. It is not recommended for small children. The estimated time for beginners is approximately one and a half hours of walking, recommending stops in the shade of the trees to rest. It is best done first thing in the morning or at dusk in summer, and hikers should bring lots of water and an energy snack. The destination is rewarding with beautiful views and landscape all around, ideal for enjoying nature and taking pictures. The huge rocks scattered everywhere create a unique scenery. People can jump on the rock for photos, though they need to pay attention to safety as it can be difficult to jump back. The area features a bit of tree variety, including evergreens, and wildlife like a shiny green lizard, ravens, and bunnies. It is considered a definite bucket list hike.

I started from the fire station, where there’s convenient free parking right next to the road. The trail is a smooth, well-maintained concrete path that steadily climbs uphill, offering a great workout and challenge. While it’s definitely a tough hike, it’s a rewarding one for those looking for something more challenging.

It's actually on top of a tower site, so it's paved. It is uphill and steep. You're rewarded by amazing views on a clear day. Excellent hike.
Dog-friendliness: It is dog friendly.

You can take the longer trail originating from Lake Poway or the shorter service road from Hwy 67's Mt. Woodson Rd. I prefer the second. Nice and quick workout (~4 miles round trip)
Restrooms: No official restrooms on the short route.
Dog-friendliness: Leashed dogs are fine
