I’d probably shop here if prices were slightly higher than other nursery options but since it’s slightly cheaper Bellefontaine is a no brainer if you live anywhere in the area. Why? Friendly, knowledgeable service provided by a small, local business that offers fair, competitive pricing.
What’s not there? Fancy merchandising, for one. No displays, no hard sell— walking through the nursery is to navigate a maze in search of treasure. And that’s the other thing: the selection is well curated but not vast. You could call it limited. There are natives but not like Theodore Payne. There are veggies but no like Armstrong.
But unless you seek a Whole Foods experience that leaves you inspired but exhausted, Bellefontaine Nursery has enough gems spread across its many micro-aisles to keep most gardeners sated.

I get ALL my David Austin roses here in this hidden gem as they have SO many options! Prices are unbeatable! Little small cute nursery tucked in Pasadena that has been passed down from generations before. Japanese owned by cousins. Don't expect a big fancy facility. Think small, family size, run down with character and many generations of love. Some of their David Austins: Strawberry Hill, Claire Austin, Teasing Georgia, Tranquility, Queen of Sweden, Mary Rose, Princess Alexandria of Kent, Crown Princess Margareta, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Olivia Rose, Charles Darwin, Carding Mill (tree form), Charlotte Rose, and many many more! They have an ENTIRE SECTION just for these beauties! 15 of my DAs are from here because they have the best price and best customer service! One of the owners, Dale, is so kind, helpful and knowledgable. He spends his time explaining everything and answering all my questions. He's very generous to even help us to the car. I left my number with Dale so when and if he gets more DAs, he will call me. What a great guy, right!?! That's what I call good customer service! I love this place and keep on coming back because it's family owned, kind owners, unbeatable prices, and willing to share their knowledge and wisedom. 100% recommend this gem!

The service here is great!!!! Staff is very knowledgeable about plants and I'm so happy I found this cute little plant nursery. I've killed so many succulents by over watering and not knowing how to care for them. Thank you for helping me know more about Hoya's and monstera plants to the nice lady in at the cash register!!

I visit many nurseries; from Torrance up to half moon bay and this is my favorite local nursery. It's small but compact and has some unusual smaller plants like hellebores and rare salvias. The owners are friendly and helpful and the nursery is calm and relaxing. Great selection of David Austin roses.

Great nursery! Alan is friendly and super helpful! He found me some indoor plants I was looking for and let me know when they had them. Beautiful plants! Nice selection with good prices. I'll definitely be back. Highly recommend!
