I had a very negative experience with Payless Car Rental after the return of my rental. About 2 weeks after I rented from them, I received a bill for deep cleaning due to dog hair. I do not have a dog, nor was there ever a dog in the car. As well as the pictures of the car they used as evidence, were not of the car I rented, different interior colors. It’s very suspicious and shady that this was done and I was charged. I will not be renting from Payless in the future. I would advise you do not rent from them either, especially at this location.

Different brands, same company group, no difference in customer experience but yet difference in prices.
Rented from Payless, part of the Avis/Budget group. The rate for a mid-size pick-up being far cheeper through their Payless brand than the other two.
When I arrived to the rental car facility, Avis and Budget were prominent fixtures at the counter with Payless tucked in the corner, not staffed by anyone. No cue line’s, no signage to see an Avis or Budget customer service agent, nothing to give any sort of hint who to see if you weren’t a frequent traveler.
The attention to detail is missed I think by the Avis / Budget group management at this location in several ways and what seems to me, as no oversight. The lack of signage outside, guiding customers to the correct lots and stalls is outdated, misguiding and doesn’t include Payless. There wasn’t anyone in the lot to assist with general guidance right out the gate, not until you found a random employee wondering the lot with other tasks could you get pointed in a general direction.
The agent who took care of me, seemed scatter brained, and I was one of several customer (regardless of brand and agent) who were assigned vehicles that weren’t there. Another agent who got me re-assigned, even made a personal cell call to a lot attendant to verify vehicle status while the previous agent walked by, curious, shrugged their shoulders and walked off into their break-room.
The vehicle I received, was washed, but somehow still had a water bottle left behind in the bed. The interior seems to get spot vac’d, but the dash and screen were dusty. The center console had crumbs and inside the center cubby, still had left over rental paper work from several other renters. The inside windshield was horribly cleaned and made driving at night difficult and much more of a chore than needed.
The best employee was the new one I turned my rental truck into, listened and noted mechanical discrepancies I discovered such as wiper blades needing immediate replacement.
What the group had as an outdoor break-room us customers walk by from return to catch a shuttle, explains a lot as well complete with over flowing trashcans and a case of alcohol.

Worst car rental experience ever! Car smelled like smoke, transmission was going out. No one works the front desk, phone number listed on their email to local Payless no longer in service. I returned the car and they are still telling me I haven’t turned my car in! I still can’t get them to answer their on their 800 #. Ridiculous

Horrible service!!! I went on July 4 already had a reservation and had to wait 1 hour and a half in line for assistance. The personnel has a horrible actitud and they said they didn’t get pay enough for all that.

Payless does not care or inspect the cars they rent, which means they do not care about the people who rent their cars.
I was given a new car (with only 5,000 miles), but the windshield wipers DID NOT WORK. On the day I picked up the car, the staff at Payless did NOT disclose any issues with the car.
I asked two of the staff (one staff at the counter and another staff at the parking lot kiosk) if the car is fully functional and each of the employees said, "The car is in full working condition.'
I stumbled upon the windshield wiper malfunction when it rained and snowed as I was driving. Since the wipers did not work, I had to pull over and wait ~5 hours on the roadside. While I waited, it took over an hour to get a hold of anyone from Payless customer service! (I called MULTIPLE times)
Once I connected to someone from Payless Customer Service, their suggestion was to drive to the nearest Payless to swap the car?!?! How is anyone expected to drive through rain and snow WITHOUT WORKING WIPERS?!?! Also, the nearest Payless was 130 miles away!
The staff then suggested that I call for roadside assistance/tow, which would have taken hours to arrive and I would have to pay hundreds of dollars!
Please look elsewhere to rent a car. I am sure rent-a-car companies have fine print written where "Customers are responsible to inspect the car", but how reasonable is it for customers to inspect everything?
WHY WOULD A CAR WITHOUT WORKING PARTS BE AVAILABLE TO RENT?!?!

Don’t waste your time renting here and take your money elsewhere. There was no one at the Payless desk at the time of pickup. So we had to wait in the Budget line which took over an hour. No one answers the phone and the customer service is nonexistent. The car itself wasn’t in the best condition, it was dirty both inside and out and the gas tank filled up to 100 at the time of pickup. The car was outdated and had way too many miles on it. It was worn out and at times didn’t feel the safest driving especially over speed bumps. Really disappointed with this company and won’t EVER be renting from here again or recommending them in the future.

I was given an EV that had zero charge within 20 miles of leaving the lot. The dash info on the Subaru Solterra was incredibly unclear until it told me I had "zero traction battery," which somehow manages to be both more and less information than a driver needs in an emergency situation with an unfamiliar vehicle. I was nearly stranded, had to go wait and pay for a charging stop that I shouldn't have needed, then wasted another hour and half returning the car to Payless and getting a different one. Incredibly disappointing and so much wasted time and stress.Edited to add: a week later, I've found an additional $198 charge on my credit card from this company, so that will be further time invested figuring out what in the world they've screwed up now.

Horrible! I booked & pre-paid through Priceline and Payless charged me again when I returned the car. Now I'm going back and forth with customer service to get a refund. Will NEVER rent through Payless again. Went there for cheap rental rates but ended up with cheap service!!
