I scheduled my Female Bully to be spayed at the Humane Society in Ojai, 3 weeks ago. There was a backlog because she weighed over 50 lbs. (59 lbs). She is a bully and short and stocky. My previous vet at 101 vets, said her weight and body mass were normal for her breed.
This am, I went to her scheduled appt, and was checking her in. One of the techs announced to the front desk that my dog was obese and looked as if she has recently given birth, without any prior history. When I told her she is only a year old, and has not had any puppies, she said “have them sign a waiver.” We agreed to sign the waiver. While weighing our dog, the Front desk assistant kept pushing my dog with her foot and telling her to STAY, while yanking on her collar. My dog had gained 1 lb since the appt was scheduled and I was quoted $175 for dogs weighing 50-80 lbs. We were informed that they would be adding on $50-$125 due to her “obesity.”
Forward to this afternoon when I picked my dog up. I was charged an additional $75 because they said my dog was “still in heat.” Her last heat ended on April 1. When I brought this to the Front Desk Asst attention, her only response was “ you’d be surprised!” I would be surprised! I thought the Humane Society was a not for profit organization. I feel betrayed, preyed on, and disgusted by the treatment of my dog. She is a professionally trained service animal. I feel like due to her “breed”, we were subjected to unfair charges, and disrespect from the staff. O/10… would not recommend.

I took all four of my kittens here and they were very prompt to return my call when I did call to schedule spay and neuter appointment. When I picked up my cats, they seem to be in a good mood and not scared or frightened where they had just been, they were so kind and helpful and very informative.

Actually located in Camarillo, CA, at the airport…difficult to find, well hidden!
Once there, it is a madhouse! Too loud, crowded with people and stressed Animals. We went seeking a female cat, 3-5 Years old…No Room to visit with cats. ( We found one Senior’ cat, when we returned, the Cat had been adopted). Not Good, very disappointing result! Beware of coming here; consider another Animal Shelter!!

I rescued a puppy here. The vet and staff made the process easy, thorough, and extremely helpful. I was not prepared and they gave me food and a crate. I will be rescuing more in the future and recommend monthly donations for all the animals they care for, too!

We wanted to adopt a dog after we just lost our little baby girl in November 2023 by getting hit by a car who was going too fast down the road. We were very excited to adopt a puppy and for some reason they forced us to do a 2 week foster to adopt program when we were just ready to take her home and have her be ours. Then my wife was hospitalized and we didn’t make it back in time on the second week and they told us our price was only 10 dollars then all of a sudden it changed to 50 dollars just because and in my mind you can’t say one thing then go back on it. It’s wrong to do to people including the fact that we bonded so well to her and really loved her as well. When we finally got a hold of the human society to explain what had happened they forced us to bring the dog back and demanded we pay 50 dollars that day and not the 10 we agreed on and after we had bonded so well with her they could not even wait one more day for us to get the 50 dollars and they caused lots of drama at my mothers house and broke my wife’s heart because we had to return the dog after she put work into starting to train her. The humane society said it’s about the dog and we just had gotten her settled in and bounded with her and now she is ripped away from us and gone. We lost our little baby girl in November and now we have lots another one because the human society couldn’t work with us. We loved her so much and now the heart break continues. We will be looking else where for a dog from now on because they hurt us and let alone confused the poor puppy about what was happening we would have given her an amazing life and it is so sad that the people who work there were so rude and hurtful to do this to my wife and I after we went through such a sad loss. We are really upset!

I scheduled an appointment for my dog to get spayed and the next available appointment was two months out which I didn’t mind. The day of the surgery they wouldn’t take my dog in because she had been in heat less than a month ago so it was too recent. No one had ever mentioned that on the phone with me. I had to be sent home and rescheduled the appointment for the next month. I understand we got sent home for the safety of my dog but it would have been nice to find out sooner than later because Ojai is a bit of a commute for me.

The Humane Society is a very important resource. For decades they've been ensuring the safety of animals in Ventura County. They do a wonderful job of rehabilitating animals & finding them new homes. They also have services to spay & neuter dogs & cats. In the past they have also offered training classes for dogs.
They also have a holiday special with Santa ? Claus & pictures with pets.
My family has also designated donations to the Humane Society when they passed.
