Ditto Tim Sullivan comment!
The quality of store service has gone down a lot in recent years. I have lived in this neighborhood for 20+ years, while we are glad to have a convenient store albeit small in scale, the service at the front desk is dismal and some of cashiers are absolutely appalling. The good ones have all disappeared. One older relatively new cashier has such a bad attitude even my friend commented that she was very sweet to her while very rude to me. The cashier actually accused me of having an attitude instead of looking at herself in the mirror. She assumed, being non-white and speaking with an accent, I must be extremely stupid and inept. She stated so in her under the breath mumbling and throwing grocery around with disdain accusing me of all sorts of stuff. That kind of attitude is inexcusable. The butcher shop at this store is still excellent, but the customer service desk and some cashiers should be jail guards instead of Safeway cashiers.
Update June 2024: While the Asian male manager is very capable and friendly, I noticed the employees are increasingly behaving similar to those at 5100 Broadway bigger store. A new male cashier made a mistake entering a code and charged extra on an item. When I noticed, he insinuated that I had put the discount label on the package to get the discount. The supervisor corrected his mistake. He was rude and super unfriendly throughout, did not apologize for his mistake nor his ridiculous accusation. Labor shortage aside, where did Safeway get all those super rude and unqualified people? They don't do anything to the store bandits, yet they treat legitimate customers like we are the thieves and "$0 shoppers".

Expensive, small

Do you like paying premium prices for non-premium items and being heckled by panhandlers every time you come to the store? Then this is the Safeway for you.
To their credit, the employees are kind, the store is clean, and the location is great. However, I don’t see how the higher prices are justified and the consistent presence of aggressive individuals demanding money outside the front door is incredibly off-putting. I would not recommend coming here at night - it does not feel safe.

Once again, the customer service at this Safeway proved to be an utter disaster. They never disappoint.
Meet 'Mr. Trapper Hat', our standout cashier of the night. It's 11:45pm, he's proudly adorned with a trapper hat and dark shades, apparently believing that the fluorescent lighting was too bright for him.
He's engrossed in conversation with another employee while listening to music, allergic to anything relevant to what he's paid to do. I start unloading my items unto the belt when I notice the self-checkout was open. But it's too late, "Mr. Trapper Hat" has abruptly halted his conversation and redirected his attention towards me, clearly irritated. I say hello but his barley audible grunt is drowned out by the music broadcasting from his cellphone.
He stands there for a moment, silently scowling before scanning my stuff. His body language is loud and clear, though. It's giving me Jules (Pulp Fiction) energy. "I double dare YOU! Say hello one more G*damn time!!!" I decided to say less.
Moral of this story. If your're needing to pickup a few things AND are overdue the anxiety of feeling punked (in worst a way), swing by this Safeway just before closing. Be sure to say hello to 'Mr. Trapper Hat.'
Or better yet, spare yourself the trouble and steer clear of this particular location altogether. Otherwise, you may walk (run) away feeling the "Don't take care, hope to see you never" hospitality.

Place is pretty run down, they don't have that many deals to make it worth coming here. Donna was nice, came in and had some questions. Some of the people working here were helpful. The food they have sis OK. I used the restroom while I was here, and it was pretty dirty. I think that needs to be addressed.

Like so many Safeways, the level of customer service has plummeted. The deli has become especially bad. No one makes eye contact because they don't want to wait on you, and they are openly hostile to each other.

I sat at Safeway customer service counter for what seems 30 minutes to get a money order. They kept calling for someone to help me and no one came. No one even tried to look and see why they weren't coming. I then told the Clerk to cancel it and he just looked at me. It's never a good experience when I go but this was bad

I have a sort of love hate relationship with this neighborhood Safeway. While I now moved away from this vicinity, it used to be my closest Safeway (though to be fair, not too much further distance-wise from the larger Pleasant Valley one). This is definitely a smaller store and while it carries limited selections, but it's still a Safeway! I enjoyed shopping their clearance aisle and appreciated their location, which was an easy walking distance past a pleasant route via the Rose Garden. However, if I did not time my visit right (evenings), I often find myself standing in the longest Safeway line possible. Because it's a smaller store, no doubt they likely employ less staff compared to its larger counterparts, but given the smaller clientele too and for me, it was hard to justify a "quick run" for small amount of items that took a long time to check-out - which is my style for shopping for groceries. However, with the addition of self-checkout stands hopefully this will improve! Much needed.

The store is OK. I am glad it exists! Employees are friendly and trying their best. However, I stopped going because of the people that hang out in front of the store and parking lot. Be prepared for aggressive panhandling and/or just straight up harassment as you are trying to enter/exit the store or go to your car.

This is the smallest Safeway I've ever been to. The layout is unintuitive. The customers are always bumping into each other and confused about where to line up for checkout. I only come here when I can't find something at a different grocery store.

Review mainly for Donna! Donna has arranged my Drive Up & Go orders these past few times and I appreciate the diligence and the care. If there's a product unavailable, Donna will call you to verify the substitution is okay. Thank you so much!!! (:

The worst most understaffed Safeway in the area. Come on an off hour or don’t bother.

My relationship with Safeway has been rocky as of late, it's not the service-oriented grocer I remember as a kid. However, Donna, this review is all about Donna. I do my best to religiously order groceries ahead of time for pick-up. Majority of the time, there are no problems or issues. Sometimes I notice that if I order past 3pm-ish, the order will not be completed, pushing it to the next day. Despite my confusion and complaint, I have just learned to order way early, like never past 1pm. **minus one star or inconsistency** Lately, ordering has been a breeze. My shopper is typically Donna, and I am blown away by her customer service and professionalism; she goes above and beyond, personally txt me asking if certain substitutions are acceptable. I am so impressed and thankful to be able to count on her to get the order right every time- she even packages the meat in a separate produce bag! Incredible. Thank you, Donna
