I have used them before, The first time service was good. The last time terrible. Jim said he would be out on four different occasions in over a year, and never showed. Tried to get him to do some work even though he was working down the block at two different locations. He said he would be out but never showed. Called several times over the year, but he never took care of the problem, even though he said he would. I had to use another company that was more reliable. Don't wait for him.

Impossible to get a response. I guess he can’t afford a secretary or assistant. It’s very frustrating when he says just stop by the shop but he’s never there and doesn’t emails or messages.

I had an absolutely excellent experience with Jim and Neon Works. They helped me design a very cool flashing neon sign for my house, and did a beautiful job with its installation (notwithstanding some structural challenges.) I know he was busy with much bigger projects but he was uniformly responsive and patient with me, and exceeded all expectations with respect to quality and value. Great small business!!

Professional all the way. They were able to make a neon with my custom font. Jim is a master of his craft. His install was not easy. This job included scaffolding and lots coordinating. Jim was able to handle it with a smile. The neons came out amazing!

I was parked on a street in San Francisco and one of the workers probably the owner of the business decided to illegally drive in reverse down the street almost scraping my car so I tooted the horn for him to pay attention and he started cursing me out I even have him on video never use this guy who wants to do business with a man that would curse a woman for blowing her horn while he was doing something illegal.

Jim is absolutely the most unprofessional business owner have met in a long time. Feel free to look at my other Yelp reviews - the vast majority are positive. I hate to leave bad review. But this guys is a scumbag. Simple: I bought a sign in of sometning I was making for my wife's birthday. He told me no problem - it would take about 10 days. 10 days pass. I am pretty easy going so do nothing. Then more days pass - I start to leave multiple voicemails. No one responds. I send a couple emails. No response. Finally - after days - he responds with a vague "I will check the schedule and get back to you". Of course, he never follows up. I email and call again. Still no response. Finally he emails back saying he does not have time because his has bigger more important projects. Again - this is for my wife's B'Day and he commited to do the project within a specified period of time. YET - after leaving me in a lurch and being totally non-responsive for a MONTH - he is not even professional enough to actually finish the job. Instead he just cancels. This guy is deplorable. He lacks the honesty and integrity that a small business owner should have. FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME VIA YELP. I am happy to share my email chain with this joker - which shows my multiple emails he never responds to. The chain also shows his ultimate response that instead of taking the job - and living up to his word - he simply rejects it because he has more important things to do. Also happy to share my cell phone records showing call to him - yet no calls coming back. I honestly hope his business fails miserably. What a piece of s&%@. A.

I aquired a vintage sign with a cracked letter. I was warned to set my expectations low but was very pleased with the work done. They took the time to answer dumb questions and gave me options rather than a flat rate. The inside of the shop is pretty incredible.

I wish that I was not writing this review. But it needs to be done as I am now the owner of a broken neon sign. I have a small business in SF and I needed a sign for my window. I must start by saying that initially Jim Rizzo was great, very helpful and patiently showed me all the options involved in making a neon sign. I picked the style, color and size and asked a lot of questions. I paid for the instal as I know nothing about neon. I got this sign installed in end of July by Jim and it looked great for about 2 months. Then one day in early October the sign broke. Jim came very quickly to pick up the broken part - but then everything changed about his professional demeanor. He didn't answer the phone or emails - and then when he did there was no explanation for what could have happened - just a request for money to repair the sign. The sign cost $970 (before installation) and the repair was to cost $550. More than half the cost of the sign itself. I had been assuming it was some sort of failure in the sign itself - but after many phone calls, emails and texts I finally heard back that the sign must have broke due to something hitting it. So I reviewed the security camera footage, quizzed everyone that was in the shop that day and came up with no event that hit the sign - nothing significant enough to remember. I told Jim, but now the response blames me for picking the type of sign I did. I am a small business owner buying their first neon sign ever not a designer spec'ing details for fabrication. I asked many times about durability of the skeletal neon versus the acrylic neon - and I was told they are the same durability once hung.So this review is to caution any small business owners looking for a neon sign - perhaps you should order it from another sign maker. So Jim - if your reading this take this as a sign that I would love my neon sign back and I am not excited about writing reviews - but Man, you gotta have a conversation with me! Understand that I am shocked my sign only lasted 2 months and at least get on the phone with me.

Neon Works repaired and restored an vintage neon sign for me. The sign is over 80 years old. Jim and his staff took exceptional care and effort to repair this family heirloom. I can't say enough about the quality of the work. Thank yo so much.

This review is for the tour that I found via Eventbrite, offered through the Oakland Heritage Association. Neon Works is a sign shop (not just neon) and art studio and they are notable for their work on Metreon, Castro Theatre, Yahoo! billboard along 80E before Bay Bridge, Lukas Taproom in Oakland, Macy's stars and reindeer installed around Christmas, and many more. The signs displayed in their shop are salvaged from shops which closed down and acquired from the new owners who didn't know what else to do with the sign other than dispose of it in the landfill. Jim salvaged these signs and placed these in his workshop, which is great because the art of neon lighting is preserved, offering visitors a chance to view these magnificent masterpieces in a museum-like manner without the museum experience. Jim Rizzo, founder and owner of Neon Works demonstrated to us how the neon lighting and the design of neon lighting process works through his candid humor.
