I needed some odds and ends and found several of the items on my list here. Good selection of things like mens hard soled slippers, casual shirts and most importantly a couple of kitchen dish towels I desperately needed. Sales associates were around but let us browse at our leisure and were ready to help us with check out as soon as we were ready. For the casual items needed this is a good local place to go. The shoe store is right next door as well which is convenient.

I did not have a good experience with the staff or the shoes I bought from the next door shoe department at the Montclair location. I had the boots for 6 weeks wore them a few times and the heel separated from the base of the shoe on the outside. I took them back they told me it was wear and tear and the 30 day return policy expired. There is no $150 shoe that should fall apart after 6 weeks. Obviously it was a lemon as the brand was always good previously. They would not hear of it and insisted I damaged the boot and they would not accept the return. I will never spend a penny there again. If you can't back up your products then that is not a place I want to shop. Also very apathetic attitude from the manager. Not really how you want to be with customers.

I love McCaulou's so much, it's my favorite store ever, whenever I go in there I get so excited to shop for my clothing and jewelry. The clothes are really nice, and they also have very good quality, and the jewelry is just so beautiful, i have a lot of jewelry from here, it's also very peaceful inside the store, and the employees are very nice and friendly, they're also very fun to talk with, I love this store, the clothes and jewelry, the atmosphere, and the employees. McCaulou's will forever be my favorite store .

I have yet to experience the poor customer service so many reviews speak of. Audrey assisted me today and she was an absolute doll. I purchased 3 pairs of quality thongs and a beautiful pair of slippers. I spent under $50 for the 4 items, such a deal. I come from time to time and it's a nice store, albeit the clothing is more middle America and not fashion forward they do have quality items. Take into account this store is in Oakland not LA or New York so you can't expect edgy style, which is fine.

I was walking down the street in Montclair, Oakland, California, and I passed by McCaulou's Shoes. Then I remembered that my partner needs a pair of court shoes for playing pickle ball. So, I thought I would check, and see what they have. When I looked in the store, and I didn't see anyone. So, I walked back about halfway into the store, to see if I could find someone to help me. I looked to the left, and I saw someone with a beige cap on, kind of hunched over, like he was on his phone. Long story short, I told him I was looking for Court shoes for my partner who is playing Pickleball. He walked me to a display that had a sign that said "New Balance", and said these are for athletics and turned around and walked back to the same spot I found him a moment before--hunched over. This is not a big box store, and I expected more help. When I went outside, to take a picture of the storefront, I saw a sign that said they were hiring.

Racist as hell bruh. The staff body-shame and threatened to call the police after we politely asked for a refund multiple times. S*** is overpriced and the only people they treat well are old white women. While I was changing a worker unlocked my dressing room without asking while I was in nothing but a bra. She raised her voice and told me I couldn't have that many items after I just saw someone else do it. She didn't even knock. Going back to the body shaming I was checking out a shirt for an exchange after they said I couldn't get a refund and they told me these exact words, "this won't fit your body." Disgusting people.

Not friendly! Unless you are one of their old lady friends in the makeup department no customer service I feel like I had to go out of my way to check out and say hello to the woman who didn't want to be bothered The manager has the same attitude so it's understandable why all the employees are being held to such a low standard

I do like to support local stores, even though they cannot compete with online stores where there are more choices, and faster service. My encounter today and in the past at Montclair McCaulou's have always been uncomfortable. Today was no different. I went in to exchange OR get a refund for a pair of socks my husband bought for me from the children's section! The woman was so unfriendly. I tried to be friendly and disarm her... Cold cold cold. She grabbed a pair of socks for me and took it to the counter, and appeared to be setting it up for a purchase. I said excuse me, but I haven't seen this pair. She responded so rudely, I'm just looking at the information on this pair, not getting for you. Here take a look. The body language, the lack of any warmth, and the inexplicable vibes make you feel like you don't belong in the store. For the record, in the past, the cosmetic department was extremely kind, pleasant and welcoming.

Montclair store employees rude and unhelpful. They do not greet you or offer assistance. Very creepy vibe.

I will NEVER shop here again. I never give bad reviews but my mom and I went in Christmas Eve on our quick last minute jaunt through Montclair. What rude people. They were closing earlier than their hours said. Which I would have thought as understandable but they could not have been more rude about it. Each one of the associates only remarked about how we only had 10 minutes. Not a 'hi' or anything. Like I said, it was understandable they wanted to leave early but we felt so uncomfortable. At that point, they should have just closed early then and not let us in- I would have been fine with that. We quickly grabbed a couple things and then they only said after the countless seconds we were there- 'head to the back so they can ring you up' ok- we weren't done and there were a couple others in the store yet but fine, I guess we'll head to the back. Only to be immediately forced to the front again to be rung up. Fine. The cashier was sweet but then again with the old mean one the second we were handed the receipt. She opened the front door and said 'oh perfect timing, bye bye' as she swung her arms out the door. She was so rude. If it wasn't for the final straw, the older woman, I would have been fine with the pressure out but it was an unbelievable experience. I thought they would be happy with the business. Apparently not. My family and I will NEVER be back.

Nice throwback neighborhood dept store. Jas a retro feel to it but in the end has a good variety of basic clothing especially for women. For men, it has more of a rugged outdoorsy styles of clothing.

Poor, poor customer relations. My daughter and I saw a display of Hydro Flasks in the window. We went in to pick out a few. After picking out a few flasks, we were stopped immediately in our tracks by the cashier and were told to purchase the hydro flasks at the register next to the display. I let the cashier know that we wanted to look elsewhere in the store. Why the issue? He explained that the hydro flasks did not have sensors on them, so we had to pay at his register and couldn't walk with them around the store. At first I didn't think anything about it. I said okay. We purchased $121 in merchandise. We left. I came back within 5 minutes and returned ALL flasks. That transaction left a bad taste my my mouth. I felt like I should not have spent $121 in this store for POOR CUSTOMER RELATIONS. Is it customary to treat customers like a thief every time they walk in? I explained my situation to the cashier. He gave me a heartfelt apology and said this was not coming from him. It was coming from management. Every time someone steals from the store, he gets yelled at. The management makes him be a security guard AT THE DOOR and cashier. He didn't blame me for how I felt and kept apologizing. He was so embarrassed for enforcing the stupid store policy and kept apologizing. He took the flasks back without a problem. He was very nice. Your store needs a BETTER WAY to handle customers and furthermore, you should not have a timid, old, almost blind man being store security AND cashier. PICK A POSITION FOR HIM. I am guessing you're too cheap to hire security, so you use a timid old man to hold down the fort? He should not put his life on the line for your cheap merchandise. I just bought a house in the Bay Area and I'm not coming into your store to steal some damned water flasks! I'm ordering off Amazon.. they can have my business! Hope your store fails big time in the Bay Area. I will tell whomever I know to avoid your little funky store. YOU ARE NUTS AND PARANOID! How about you make friends and not enemies?
