I do not recommend going to this place unless you want people to take advantage of your money. Braid technique is not good. They Yank and pull your hair with no care causing breakage, that’s not even the worst part there’s no communication, no comfort and they reuse products and tools on all clients without cleaning them. Over priced, non-experienced, prices online are not accurate for styles.

Today I had my very first appointment at this wonderful hair braiding shop my daughter found, but she lives in Maryland and I live in CA. Natalie (spl) did my knotless box braid and I can't tell you how her energy was calming as she began working on my kinky natural hair. Although my hair took longer than expected it was well worth the wait. She braided with precise detail, trimmed, curled and did a beautiful ponytail with the help of another stylist for that part. I watched her only eat half her lunch to make sure my hair was done. My 64th birthday is soon and I couldn't ask for a better birthday gift to myself. Thank you so much Natalie. I will be back

If you don't know how to perform a service, just don't do it. Don't try it and act like you know what you're doing. And then have somebody's hair and hard earned money wasted.... never go back to the shop ever again. I went in for 2 cornrows and my 16-year-old niece could have done it better. The braids are uneven frizzy and badly braided.. I am taking a trip for my birthday and it is too late to do anything about it, but I hate it and i'm so angry....just awful. I feel very taken advantage of just because they African. Don't mean they know how to braid hair correctly.

I really don't understand why this place has so many negative reviews. The service and communication I had with the salon was great! Backstory: I booked with a young stylist that sent me the dreaded "hey boo" text after I traveled from Pleasant Hill to Oakland during morning rush hour. It was 9AM and nothing in the area was open. I booked for knotless boho braids with human hair and felt out of luck. I searched google and thought I take my chance with an African braid shop. Communication: It was now 9:30 and I called most African hair braiders in the area and none of them answered. Then I found Djama. Djama had me send her a picture of the style and within minutes she found someone to do my hair and I was quoted a price. I arrived at the salon, at 10AM with my hair (not included in price). I was greeted when entering the door and asked to take a seat. My Braider was traveling in to do my hair ON HER DAY OFF. I was seated for my appointment by 10:15. My Braider asked me questions to get a clear idea of what I wanted. She made it very clear that she would do any style and she was there to make sure I was happy. She took feedback and executed the style I wanted very neatly. The Hair: I got EXACTLY what I asked for. My hair turned out beautiful and I am so happy. The parting is crisp and the braids are the size they should be. She was sure to use all of the human hair I brought and dipped me at the end. Looking around at other braiders all the clients seated hair looked good. Atmosphere: Is what you would expect from an African Braid shop. Nothing fancy but serves its purpose. Thank you Djama for being available last minute and providing excellent service! I will be returning

Very nice group of ladies! I learned a little French while I was there too ☺️ Nana did my hair and she made sure she was doing my hair the way I wanted it to be done.

Here's what I got versus what I asked for. I typically do this braid style myself and it never turns out this thick. First, I asked for knotless, and the lady said knots are better. So I allowed her to do knots and it was extremely painful, despite asking her to ease up on tension. She also used way too much hair for each part. I bought SEVEN packs and she said it was not going to be enough to complete the style. That's why the braids came out so big like you see in my picture. I took them out when I got home because I was just in pain and so unhappy. I think they do well with other styles that are harder to mess up like cornrows, but if you have a very specific request or a more unique braid style you may walk away upset.

Very very unprofessional. I called ahead to have an appointment scheduled. I was told to come in at 2:00pm on 1/7/2024. I got there on time and was told the person doing my hair was on the way still. I sat and waited for an entire hour before I decided to leave. I was only there to have my knotless braids touched up in the front and back only which was no more than about 20 braids. Not to mention I do not live close so both my gas and time was wasted. I also have an upcoming vacation this week and now have no clue what to do with my hair. They have a real problem which scheduling appointments and not being able to follow through here. Ive seen it happen to at least 3 other customers as well. Not reliable and I will not go back again.

Wish I could make a separate review for individual stylist. Thought I was making an appt with Umi over text but realized everyone uses the same cell phone and doesn’t tell you who you’re talking to, so someone else did my hair. When I ltook the braids out and detangled, I ended up with a FULL BAG OF HAIR that came out ?. I now have 2/3rds of my hair left, a short afro of broken hair sticking up/out from the rest of my longer hair, so I have to use a holding stick or headband now when wearing hair back. Not just the edges, everywhere. I make a living off of my hair with modeling, commercials, or I did before this. The YEARS of growing out my hair and taking ALL day, for years, to gently detangle and care for it went down the drain.
I was getting braids because I was going away on a grief retreat after losing someone very close to me, and didn’t want the added stress of dealing with hair. I blew dry it straight to make it easier. The woman that did my hair rushed through it, jamming the crochet tool through my hair instead of pivoting it to get it through the cornrows without breaking. My hair is longer so when the lower part of hair would start to intertwine during braiding, she literally ripped it apart in a hurry. After seeing that first large chunk of hair fall to the ground, I tried to separate it myself when I could see that happening again.
The cornrows were too big, she purposely parted one on the side double the width of the rest of them. The crochet braids couldn’t hide the larger corn rows. They were EXTREMELY tight. Got a ton of bumps then realized my widows peak was gone in a few days, I could see the white tipped hair follicles sticking out around my edges. Taking ibuprofen the first couple days like I usually do, did nothing.
I also asked if they could do the illusion parted cornrows at the front, instead of regular cornrows. but they said no since my hair is long. That didn’t make sense because you’re only braiding the roots together, but with a part in between, so it’s not really taking more time. It would’ve looked more natural this way, which is important for me to get modeling work.
The day before returning from my trip I texted Umi directly asking if she can fix my hair when I got back. She said yes. When I arrived she was very nice and willing to do what she could. The other stylists were chiming in saying I should’ve called earlier, but what would the point of that be if I was out of town and couldn’t come sooner?. They said I should’ve told the stylist she was braiding too tight. It always feels too tight the first days. BUT I’m not a professional and even I know if I am pulling someone’s hair too tight. You can see it! I would’ve unbraided it myself but couldn’t see where the black thread was to cut. They were just rude and blaming me. Umi and I scheduled another day for me to come back, but I decided the damage was already done.
I’ve gotten braids maybe 10 times, this has never happened. If you go here, I suggest specifically making an appointment with Umi. This added a lot of physical pain to a very painful and stressful time in my life. I couldn’t focus, relax, or even swim at this retreat, which was by a lake. Im also not getting much work now, it’ll take YEARS to grow back. I don’t understand why some stylist really just don’t give a F if they ruin YEARS of hair, as long as they get paid.

Beware! Thanks for your response. I've supported your shop for 3 years, and have never experienced this level of unprofessionalism. First, the appointment time I scheduled was forgotten and I had to pick up the stylist from her home. I sent multiple pictures of the twist style I wanted before the appointment. I was reassured that the stylist could perform the work, but half way through the appointment, she tells me she doesn't know how to do twists. My experience at your business has completely eroded my trust.Service: Twist braids

I really like this little place . I have gotten my hair braided here several times mostly knotless box braids. The ladies are warm and inviting. I think that’s why I like it so much the women eat and talk and have their children and grand babies in there . Makes you feel safe and welcomed. Excellent quality and service.

I wanna update my review from my last experience coming into this shop. I previously got my hair done in this shop n left a nasty review when it could’ve been solved with me on my side communicating more thoroughly. I apologize for coming off so rude. I was definitely upset n thought I was left wit no options. I wanna thank the owner n the rest of the lady’s for being so kind on my second appointment, n working with me to figure out how I wanted my style done. Honestly I love this shop and I’ll definitely be back thanks again!Service: Box Braids

This was a wonderful experience for my 10-year-old boy. He got cornrows and he loves the neat and clean work that he got. Everyone there is wonderful and you will be lucky to get your hair done in such a wonderful environment with skilled braiders.
