If you’re like me, and many other California’s your garden yields an abundance of food, more than you and your neighbors can consume. I’m so excited to share our abundance with others in my local community through FOOD FORWARD!

I have been a volunteer for Food Forward for almost 5 years!! I love it. Never have I volunteered and been able to see so clearly what a difference my efforts ... and those of the organization ... actually make in a community as large and diverse as Los Angeles. Food insecurity is a REAL problem that affects, not just the staggering homeless population here but, many more people who are struggling to make ends meet or live in communities without nearby grocery stores offering fresh produce. Food Forward has brilliantly created a web of connectivity between existing non-profits who already support our community, with their own superlative efforts at claiming unwanted and undervalued produce - from the backyards of home owners, to farmers markets, to the wholesale market and in many other venues where fresh produce was previously getting dumped. Imperfect produce? YES! Past-its-prime produce? YES! They make sure it goes to organizations that get it directly to people in need ... in shelters, at food pantries, at soup kitchens, etc. Now, Food Forward is even teaming up with several powerful organizations in under-served communities to directly hand out fresh produce ... no questions asked ... monthly and even twice a month. These "food pop-ups" are happening more and more, and Food Forward is supporting them ALL. Food Forward brings the produce they collect to these pop-ups by the truckload and teams of volunteers sort the usable from the unusable, quickly ... then bag it up in hundreds of equally portioned bags ... and then had it out to waiting people. And we do this with a HUGE SMILE on our faces. Food Forward has an unbelievably low overhead. There are very few paid positions and they grow based on the efforts of countless volunteers and donations raised at various events throughout the year. Very few other organizations I have worked with can hold a candle to their efficiency and economy. I can only encourage anyone reading this to support them in any way you can. Volunteer, donate, or both! It will be time and/or money well spent ... and leave you with the most assured "feel good" you've ever had. This is a promise!
