Did a great job repainting my old Toyota. Looked brand new again. Gave it a few more years of life and the price was reasonable!

I bought a used 2001 Dodge Wheelchair van from the owner of ADVANCE AUTO-TECH CENTER in North Hollywood, KARL VILLALTA, almost two years ago. I liked Karl right away and his shop seemed very well run and very professional. Although he was asking nearly $5,000 for a 15 year-old van with almost 300,000 miles on it, we settled at $4,200 and I figured I was paying a little more than it was worth because of his 'expert' opinion on the condition of the vehicle as well as buying a little insurance given the fact that he was a mechanic and had a very well-run & friendly auto repair shop that would be easy to find if something went wrong. Karl even came to pick me up in Santa Monica when my ride fell through and we spent over an hour talking and getting to know each other. He told me the van had been his daughter's who was a teacher and that she used the van to transport handicap students. He also told me that he had rebuilt the entire thing from the ground up for her. I believed him even though he only had one (1) very off-market key to give me at the time of purchase that didn't open the rear door, and the steering column appeared to have been hacked into around the ignition switch. He also insisted that we transfer title on the day of purchase at a nearby DMV service center. He said the charge was $25 and that he would pay for it. Looking at the receipt days later I learned that the charge was $55 and that I had ended up paying $30 additional for service I could have done at AAA for free. There was also a 50,000 mile discrepancy between the lower milage in the CraigsList ad and the higher milage on the odometer to which Karl could only shrug his shoulders when I asked about it. The red flags were adding up. A locksmith was eventually able to make me a duplicate original that finally did open the rear door. How could a professional mechanic that had repaired a vehicle so extensively and that had been owned within his immediate family be so ignorant about basic things like keys & milage? I would also find out later that it was missing a spare tire, the heater didn't work, it had a knocking sound coming from the engine underneath, and the transmission was slipping. I don't drive it much but it is still running nearly two years later and my first smog check is now due. I took it to a nearby STAR smog station where it failed due to two out of three catalytic converters that could not be identified with executive order numbers; in other words, the vehicle is unable to comply with state law emissions requirements due to illegal exhaust equipment. I priced new catalytic converters at $289.99 each at O'relly's. So thats $600 before installation which would probably round it out to about $1000 grand total. I thought KARL VILLALTA might be able to offer me some advice at this point. After all, he had sold the vehicle to me, and further, as a professional mechanic, an auto-repair business owner, and having performed extensive repairs on the vehicle, he should have been aware of any illegal equipment installed on the vehicle and furthermore should have disclosed that information to me, the buyer, which he did not. After contacting the owner of ADVANCE AUTO-TECH CENTER, KARL VILLALTA, regarding the illegal exhaust equipment installed on the vehicle he had sold me he replied in a text message: "I sold this vehicle two years ago...I really do not have anything to do with this vehicle anymore." I couldn't disagree more. Given Mr. Villalta's self-proclaimed personal history with the vehicle its hard to imagine that he was not aware of undocumented emissions equipment on the vehicle. And how could the smog check that he had done on the vehicle at WELLS SMOG 11361 SATICOY ST. IN SUN VALLEY 91352 on May 8th, 2017 with EDMOND TEMOURIAN/EO040886 be legal with aftermarket emissions gear installed on the vehicle? You mean to tell me that between the two of these auto repair & diagnostic professionals nobody noticed the aftermarke
