I have never been to a restaurant that had more a crazy pretentious vibe that served such mediocre food. The sushi itself is overpriced and honestly doesn't taste that great. I have been to a lot of Sushi places, and its the most unremarkable sushi I had. They do try very very hard to make convoluted sushi creations that just taste weird and not good. The sushi tasted DRY (I know, right? how do they do that?!?) they have exactly zero side sauces that tasted good as well. The wait staff all look like they're prisoners to a crazy overlord, I felt sorry for them. I swear one was blinking morse code for "help" at me while we ate. Also, be sure to make sure they're open with weird days/hours they keep. The bathroom is dirty, its attached to a random expensive grocery mart, and don't lean against the fence outside or it will fall over and you'll maybe die. The End!

Our reservation was at 4:30. Took a very long time to get our food. Over 15 minutes just to get a beer. Ordered the upgraded sashimi 20 piece. Shame on me for not asking the price of the upgrade, I was very surprised when it ended up being $86 for the 20 pieces. It came with sauces that the chef recommended, the sauces were mediocre. One person in our group eats sushi with rice papers and was only able to get one roll because they ran out. We were there for an hour before they told us that.

Excellent service, homey surroundings and super yummy sushi options! We found our new fav sushi restaurant in the Grass Valley area ?Vegetarian options: The Kappa Maki roll was our favorite... we also enjoyed the California Roll, and fresh salmon Philly Roll... amazing beverage options also!

Wonderful experience, the service is exceptional and fast. It very much feels like a professional chef's "take" on sushi, so there's a lot of interesting entrees like the truffle sashimi which have these very intense flavor combinations. Personally I prefer a lighter touch, so on that note I HIGHLY recommend the salmon sashimi, they have the largest cuts of any sushi place I've been to in the area, for a very reasonable price. They also go above and beyond with their plating, for instance the aforementioned salmon sashimi is styled like a rose, which you can see on their website. Great shooters as well! I got the scallop with shochu, and they also have a "crazy" sake to go with it if you're into very sweet alcohol. Overall I think it's well worth the visit, considering the quality of everything on the menu I feel it's very reasonably priced.

This is a really special spot. I might have a sushi addiction, no, I do. Sushi in the Raw truly impressed me. Creative and elegant, everything from the unique flavors to beautiful presentation, the food is all skillfully crafted and the service is friendly and just the right amount attentive. I love everything about this restaurant.

A little too many dishes with mango lol, but the sushi dishes are definitely really, really good. I must admit I had my doubts, but there’s a couple of these dishes that have a nice balance of lemon kicker man. This place is a must try.

Truly amazing fish and sushi. My only complaint is that it took a bit long to get our order and food but well worth the wait

Omg... I have had sushi everywhere I've travel. This is probably one of my top 2 or 3 ever.Items you'll never find anywhere. The creativity, imagination and freshness / quality of the fish is far above standard. The staff is fantastic and helpful exploring the menu. Please ask.... You'll find surprises not on the menu. When the food comes to your table they describe each item.Reservations are hard to get but well worth the wait.. You'll understand once you've had the experience of Sushi in the Raw.You'll be booking your next visit before you leave the restaurant.Vegetarian options: Veg delights everywhere.Kid-friendliness: Yes they are but WHY? This is an Experience. Kids just can't understand how good this place really is. Plus the price point is not kid friendly. Plus loud kids can ruin any dining experience. Pay a baby sitter "Double", you'll still save$$. Plus appreciated by everyone in the restaurant. And the space kids take up will open tables space for others to enjoy this experience. Really leave you loud obnoxious kids home.

My review would be in complete agreement with Electra Redd’s review, to the letter. I split my time between Nevada City and LA. There is not a comparable sushi place to Nobu, Sugarfish or Katana here and that’s to be expected. That being said. Sushi in the Raw is very good, the best between here and San Francisco, except for their refusal to sell Ahi tuna. But then we’re in California, everyone’s got a find a cause to support. Their’s is apparently the plight of the tuna. All of my dinner experiences since they moved have been just as Electra Redd stated. I took my two young daughters one night. Dinner took three hours, my girls were well behaved but nearly inconsolable waiting on their food. Every time has been at least a two and half hour ordeal. I’ve spent thousands of dollars and unfortunately many hours at Sushi in the Raw. What makes it worse is seeing someone order much after I ordered and for them to receive their order first, the same meal as I ordered knowing the wait staff mistakenly served them, walking right beside our table. When confronted she said ours would be out shortly. No apology. 20 minutes later it came out. Really? So how long does it take to fillet a piece of fish for nigiri or sashimi? It’s the best we have unfortunately but hardly worth the frustration of a 3 hour meal and servers that don’t really care about your experience.

This place used to have the best sushi in town and they still do. Unfortunately the slow service in the kitchen ruined the meal. This is the second dining experience we’ve had where it has taken over 2 hours to eat. We would order Nigiri and they would come out 1 every 20 minutes. We gave it a second chance for our friend birthday and had to leave before the last 3 items were ready due to it taking over 2 hours. The servers were nice enough but they didn’t really do much to make the whole experience better except give us lots of excuses, including blaming us for not coming in earlier even though our reservation was for 8pm. The meal was ruined because of all of this. Amazing quality and delicious but the service was abysmal. The servers also forgot multiple things we ordered. We won’t be back until this gets fixed if at all.

The food is still excellent but the atmosphere of their new location is really a step down from their previous super cute location in downtown Nevada City.

Oh my my my. Sushi in the Raw will ruin you for sushi. They’ve got a great origin story, and it’s really special that Nevada city has a sushi restaurant of this caliber. Something you might only expect to find in a big city it’s so high quality. It’s like there are unicorns in the back making love into the secret sauce that goes into all this exquisite food. Every time I come here I feel as though I have partaken in a great secret. Favorite dish is the truffle sashimi, the quail eggs, heavens spoons, and all the shooters. Plus all the servers are great- you can tell they love working there because they know how special the food is. What a treasure. My favorite dining experience of my life. Truly ceremonial grade yummy.
