Very rude shop owner/worker and a crazy multi-page hateful letter to the town plastered on their window. It was a very negative space and everything was so crowded and hard to peruse. Honestly my mom and I walked in and left very quickly because we felt very unwelcome which was so odd after the rest of our very pleasant trip around town. Honestly don't bother with this place, there are tons of other great shops around. Also their "children's" section says "For Little Bairns" and that's just lazy.

Signs in the window made it abundantly clear I'm not welcome in this shop. I've gotten along with folks of all types in Nevada City, it's a very kind and open hearted place in general. Not here.

Donated books come here to clog their shelves. Not an expansive category of books. Some are hard to reach. The worker seemed busy reading a book Vs providing service. Best to find a Barnes and Noble or another store that provides service.

Wanted to poke around to see if they had any paleontology books but I was immediately turned off by the twelve page homophobic screed and pictures of dead soldiers they had taped to their window. Apparently they were having a pissing match with the local ordinances about pride flags being flown during June and on flag day, and had literally been taking down pride flags and putting up United States flags until the police showed up to replace them. Their response to this "tyrannical" and "oppressive" behavior by "Nazis" was to write an incredibly offensive and homophobic 12 page screed in their stores door adjacent window. I'm addition to such tidbits as referring to pride month as "the 30 days of shame," the store was additionally using images of dead soldiers without consent or permission. So like homophobia aside, as a guy from a family who's been military for the last three generations I thought the entire display was also incredibly disrespectful to the armed forces. You can't use images of dead soldiers without their families or next of kin's consent, claim it's a way of honoring them, and then exploit their tragedy and sacrifice to support your own homophobic beliefs that the military in no way whatsoever supports or endorses. Overall I would rate the store a 0 out of 5 if I could for the shitty experience I had with them.

We are avid book nerds and we were stoked to explore the three bookshops this small town has on offer. However as soon as we walked up to this one it was clear we were not welcome at Toad Hall, as the front window display is a clumsy mess of printed tirades about how gay pride month is 30 days of shame and "those kinds of customers" and how they didn't want to put up pride flags because it's not something they believe in and they can't believe the local outrage about their homophobia and how could something like this happen in the US of A?!?, etc. Whelp, looks like there's actually just TWO bookshops in Nevada City. But good job ultra progressive Nevada City for standing up against bigotry. There are still pride flags in about half the other stores and it's the end of August. God bless gay America.

This place is a rare find!! The best of the best in literature is all you will find at Toad Hall. The owners are careful curators of their store; leaving this book girl in awe of their selection. I found a pristine copy of Miss Masham’s Repose by T. H. White and an excellent copy of Parnassus on Wheels. Having just went to the book town, Hay on Wye in Wales, we were impressed to see that King Richard of Hay on Wye had visited the store. My husband being retired Navy, greatly appreciated their sign on the front of the store defending the American flag; I was impressed by the owner’s vast knowledge of truly great books.

Hours are currently approximately 8-3/ 7days a week depending on their doctor appointments. They'll be closed during the Victorian Christmas events.A lovely book shop with lovely people. Their book store name was inspired by the book The Wind in the Willows and they have toads scattered around in the shop. ?

This store is so cool. I know there is something mysterious going on here, I just haven't figured it out yet. Very charming book store, something you would see in a movie. This is a must-stop for any book aficionado! Plenty of books to peruse. Escape the hustle and bustle of the daily grind and get lost in a good book! Can't wait to come back and visit!

Toad Hall has everything I want in a used bookstore: an abundance of books dating from recent publications back to the 19th century (many of which are out of print), a surprise around every corner, a knowledgeable staff, and a peaceful environment without noisy kids, people on their phones, etc. Every time I've visited I've left with a stack of treasures. Contrary to what some people have written, I have always found the fellow behind the counter to be helpful and even affable. As for people complaining about the cash-only policy: it's hard enough for used bookstores to survive without also having to give up card vendor fees and losing a percentage on every sale. If you're so keen on recent technology, why don't you just download whatever nonsense it is you want to read onto your Kindle, and leave the used bookstores to customers who appreciate them for what they are?

A wonderful secondhand bookstore. Small space crammed with books, but all the better! Specializes in Scotland.
