First rate book store. This is a must visit site for bibliophiles. Allow yourself a good chunk of time to explore the many choices.

This is a small bookstore, but they have such an interesting selection of used books covering every topic under the sun — could easily have spent a day here perusing the aisles. There are a few chairs set out for reading, the staff were friendly, prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is so cozy. Found a few gems and will be coming back for more!

my favorite book store. has a bunch of leftist books very prominently displayed, and while I never got the chance to ask i'm sure everyone there is very knowledgeable on those subjects. the entire place is so cute and they have a cassette player and pride flags in the window and it's just perfect. I love this place very much

Just stopped in here for the first time. The person working there was so incredibly friendly and helpful! I wish I could’ve spent a lot more time talking with them and looking through the selection. I wish every town could have a book store like this. Strongly recommend to any and everyone

What a magical, mystical bookstore tucked away unassumingly full of all kinds of books...my favorite kind of bookstore

Showed up on a Sunday because THE WEBSITE said it was open. We arrived and it was closed with a sign on the door saying it was only open Saturday 12-6. There was someone inside so I knocked and asked if they were open, as some places will let people in if they are there anyway. She said that, no, they were indeed closed and pointed to the sign with the Saturday-only sign. Above that sign was another sign saying “please help save Old Capitol books”. It was asking for donations. It seems like if you have people at your store who want to buy something from you and you really need the money, it might be a good idea to let them in. It doesn’t seem like their heart is in it. Found a much better bookstore walking distance away called THE ROSE BOOKS AND OBSCURITIES. Very pretty bookstore with a friendly owner. A very cool selection of used books, some very beautiful copies of fiction and non-fiction books. Reasonably priced. Do yourself a favor and go there instead.

They’ve gone out of business. Visited there on Saturday morning, July 29, 2023 at 11:15 AM and the doors were shut. I will miss this place.

Amazing place to stop by and soak up the cozy chill vibes of their new location. Great books all around, and art too. Owners are easygoing, friendly people. Plus they do events and have a unique community. The best of Monterey. Their hours are flexible so just stop by and peek upstairs to see if they’re open!

Cute place, it's small and a bit pricey, a good experience and the owner was very kind. If in doubt, just stop by, couldn't hurt to see what he has.

Nice selection of used fiction you don't normally see. Prices similar to other used book stores. An eclectic range of nonfiction and a handful of antique books. Only downside was that the store was unexpectedly closed mid-afternoon and we had to come back later. Definitely a spot to poke around and get a little lost in.

Very cute and cozy little place. There’s a few chairs in the back for you to sit and browse, and it has that hidden-gem used book store feel that makes me feel at home. We bought a book of poetry for $6 and a German cookbook from the late 1800s for $20. The guy that worked there was very chill and friendly. If I visit Monterey again, I would definitely like to come back here!

Stopped by on a walk around my hotel area, and it was a very pleasant nook filled with 2nd hand books. The space is small, the shelves are full, but the feeling is homey and welcoming. The person behind the desk was kind and asked what I was looking for. It felt like a little secret alcove you only found by chance. Would return if I wasn't only in Monterey for a vacation.
