My husband and I started talking about possibly getting a dog once we moved into our new place. We actually specifically picked a place that allowed us to have pets. One day we decided to go to the animal control center in San Francisco and fell in love with a puppy but before we could get our landlord to write us a letter, she was gone. We were so bummed out. Then one day, back in July 2023, I was off work and decided to take my kids to the humane society of silicon valley. We had a few dogs we wanted to look at based on their online profiles. Not going to lie, we fell in love with one of the puppies that wasn't even on our list. She was gentle and so sweet but also shy. My kinds loved her and the lady helping us, allowed us to play with her until my husband got off work and came to meet with us. I think it was a little annoyed that he didn't get to come and see the other dogs before we made the decision to take her. However, it's been 6 months and our puppies is absolutely attached to my husband. He cuddles her all day long. The whole process was super easy and they answered all of our questions. Unless other places, they don't need proof of home ownership or landlord letter, they said they will take all of their animals back if it does not work out. We had an issue with her for the first three months because she started to snap at my kids when they tried to pet her. We didn't feel it was safe for my kids when we weren't around and at one point, we felt kind of hopeless. We talked about trying everything we can before we made any decision to return her. We talked about it with the vet, enrolled her in the humane society training, and started having my kids be the only ones in the house to give her treats. I am proud to announce that as of October 2023, she has not been aggressive or has taken a nip at my kids. They still give her treats, multiple times a day and when they lay down, she comes to cuddle team and gives them kisses. Her name is Ariel by the way. We kept her name from the human society when we adopted her because both my kids are girls and they love princess Ariel. Ariel is a border collie mix and she is such a quick learner. she was potty trained within the first three days after we got her. She great with her recalls and she loves all other dogs she sees. However, she still gets skittish with other people so we're trying to work on that. I just want to say thank you to the humane society for all that you guys do and for allowing us to take our baby home and giving us guidance by offering us training lessons. We currently live in a townhome that has a huge patio but we said that when we buy a house with a yard, we'll definitely go back to adopt another dog.

I have contacted HSSV regarding a few puppies and can never get any background information on how the puppies were treated and/or how they came to the shelter. I'm told they were rescued and HSSV has no background information. You don't know if the puppy was abused, was around humans, malnutrition etc. All very important information to know in order to make sure the pup will be a good fit for your family. I'm not sure why they don't keep this information especially with the abundance of funding they receive.

This Milpitas location is actually the Santa Clara branch. It replaced an aging building in Santa Clara. This facility is very modern and expansive with room to both accommodate and exercise it’s temporary (?) residents. Parking is convenient and extensive with substantial awnings as well.My visit was for cats/kittens which is located just to the right from the lobby. You will be requested to sign in and can do so from your phone. There are about 15 smaller rooms holding 2-5 animals and a much larger bonus room holding 10-20 animals with access to a “patio”. Entry to each room is permitted if unlocked provided that you regularly sanitize your hands to protect the residents.Staff is always on hand to answer questions. Adoption is easy. Be sure to look for periodic discounted periods where fees are greatly reduced (eg, cats/kittens were recently $20 ea).

They are open on weekends for walk-ins. You may have to wait a bit but there really is not a better staffed center in the Bay area. The facility is great. Adoption rates vary. Often they have specials. They also typically have puppies but they go fast. Staff is kind and helpful. We adopted two. Pickles and Olive!!

Tammy is a very misleading person. She told me if I found the cat in Milpitas then I can bring the cat in. Even after I gave her the address, she refused to take the cat. Not sure what kind of lousy service that is but this employee is definitely not working in the best internet of the animals.

Sad to have been turned away with a stray and her baby, told only healthy strays and babies or injured accepting only!
