Wonderful place. I come here all the time as a volunteer, and the staff are simply amazing. They really do care about these animals, and are definitely worth supporting.

I adopted a wonderful cat through this organization. They brought him to me with litter, food, a favorite blanket, new collar and tag, micro-chipped and he had a vet exam a few days prior to our appointment. They did bring him to the house so they could see where he would be living and have an informal in person interview. The whole process does take a few days. I met him on a Saturday, filled in the application and he was vet checked within a couple of days and he came to me that next Saturday. They take very good care of their animals and know them well. They also keep them forever as needs be. Some shelters ship less adoptable animals to other kill shelters over time. These guys don't do that.

I applied to be a volunteer and I have other rescue experience and dog sitting experience and they still haven’t responded even 8 days later. I decided to volunteer with WAGS instead who approved me a day later.

so sad, this place practices animal warehousing. they have animals in here for months/ years, and ive had friends and others try to adopt these kitties and gotten absolutely no response, not even a rejection letter. these kitties are stuck inside and no one will work to give them to homes that want them :( -from, a past volunteer

I've been volunteering here about 6 months, and they take amazing care of all the shelter animals here. They have dogs cats and bunnies! I hang out with the cats, who are allowed to roam in full size areas as opposed to inside tiny cages. In the front area they have bedrooms specifically for them as well! If you're looking to give a dog, cat or even a bunny a forever home, this place should be your first stop if you're in Orange County.

I must say that this was an absolutely horrible experience dealing with this organization. My wife and I had been very interested in adopting a bonded pair of cats from this shelter. We filled out an exhaustive application form that was several pages long. After a few hours we received an email confirmation that our application had been received and someone would contact us "shortly" to let us know how to proceed. This was on a Saturday. So we waited. Nothing Sunday. Not a word from them on Monday. Finally on Tuesday we sent off a couple of friendly emails trying to coax a response. Keep in mind that they do not answer their phone, nor do they allow visits to their facility. The only way to reach them was via email. So on Tuesday they finally responded by rejecting our application stating that Huntington Beach had an excessive Coyote problem. Keep in mind that on the application we stated these answers to the following questions: "Where will the cat be during the day." Our answer: "indoors". "Where will the cat sleep at night?" Our answer: "indoors." I thought we had made it perfectly clear that these would be indoor cats. On the application they asked about previous pets. We had taken in a feral alley cat off the street back in 2009. That beautiful cat named "Louie" just passed away a week ago. We had him for 14 years. On the application we had stated that the cat was "allowed outside in the backyard under supervision" for less than one hour a day. Again this was a feral outdoor cat who was hard wired to go outside to mark its territory. Usually this took about 15 minutes and then back inside. I live in the middle of a tract at the end of a cul de sac. Apparently this was a deal breaker with AALOC. Again remember, this cat was a long time outdoor feral cat that was literally living in the alley by our home and had been outdoors for an extensive time before we took him in. Even though we stated the new cats would be indoors, they would not allow us to adopt. Now keep in mind, AALOC is run out of a residential home in Midway City. The animals are housed in outdoor enclosures that I would assume be more vulnerable to Coyote attacks then if they were inside of my home. Add to that that just a few weeks ago AALOC posted on their InstaGram page that "one of their long time residents" had just been diagnosed with Feline Leukemia Virus, and would no longer be allowed to enter the communal cat areas. My thought is how many other cats have they exposed to this highly infectious virus? Another strange occurrence from AALOC is that they contacted our veterinarian as a reference AFTER they had declined our application. Bizarre. We called them out on this and they openly admitted it. They claimed our Vet said that they could not confirm whether our previous cat was an indoor or outdoor cat. We contacted our Vet and they said that was NOT what they told them. In fact our Vet told AALOC that we were exceptional, responsible pet owners. Our cat had yearly checkups, vaccinations and dental work and in his last years battling cancer, Oncology care and Chemotherapy. We spent untold thousands on this cats health care and no expense was too great. Now let me tell you about the house these cats would have been living in. It's almost 1,900 square feet valued at 1.4 million dollars. The property is over a quarter acre that sits at the end of a quiet cul de sac in Huntington Beach. There are multiple couches and window enclosures that look out over what many people have referred to as one of the most beautiful gardens in Orange County. We are on the Mary Lou Heards memorial garden tour every year, an event that raises thousands of dollars for The Sheepfold Charity. This house is literally a cats paradise. My wife and I have also done charity work for WAGS pet adoption in Westminster. We would do dozens of loads of laundry for them when their machines were broken. All of this and we are not good enough to adopt from AALOC. And keep in mind, they never gave us the

Their online application form is invasive, ridiculously long, and if you make a single mistake, it'll reset the entire application. Good luck trying to adopt a pet here, I can go drive and adopt a new pet somewhere else by the time I finish their online app.
