February 2023 by Raelene S.
When I first moved home (from Boston) I joined in on a few events from LAVA. The first couple of events I'd volunteered for (Art and Wine events) were nice and "acceptably" handled/run. Then the management deteriorated and I encountered some overbearing and rude behavior from other volunteers so stopped volunteering. This last Feb (2023) I saw a notice for a Choco-Stroll. Even though I'm now in Redwood City I like to keep an eye out for fun Bay Area events. When I saw this one it sounded adorable so I invited my neighbor to go wander around downtown LA with me. The weather was picture perfect, I love the shops in downtown Los Altos and thought it would be a nice way to support some of them. What a disappointment. Zero apparent signs for participating places,. I was assuming participating shops would be easily identifiable so didn't print out a map. I saw some shops had signage - if you got close enough to see the signs and no one was standing in front of them... but the fun part - getting a tasty bit of chocolate while learning about or shopping at a new store - was absent. A generic bag of Ghiardelli is not what my friend or I (or others who went, from what I overheard, we talked about in passing) had expected. What a fun build up to a lousy-low execution event.Sorry, LAVA, didn't realize things had slipped so far with the organization - apparently been going downhill even further since I last participated (years ago now).I wish you well and hope things will improve. Key to a successful event - don't overpromise, make signage readily evident or product a real map (not just a list of participating venues), yadda yadda.:'(

The Los Altos Village Association, led by Scott for many years, with wonderful second-in-charge folks over the years (Shannon, and now Liz), does a wonderful job. Through their efforts, the town comes alive with many annual events: the arts and wine festival, the Beer Stroll, Wine Stroll, Bubbly Stroll, and a lot more. It brings new people to our town, brings out townies, and is a great benefit to all. Thank you, Scott, Liz, and Shannon.

My daughter and I really loved the Holiday stroll that they held in downtown Los Altos each December complete with a carriage ride and roasted chestnuts ( when the stand was there). It was a lot of fun to support the local shops and enjoy hot coco from Pete's Coffee while strolling around and shopping at night.

Nice organized arts and wine festival, lots of booths worthy of spending time with your friends and family. Lunch at Urfa bistro, lovely Mediterranean restaurant, then keep shopping around with coffee from Starbucks. Perfect weekend activities.

The Los Altos Village Association, LAVA, highlights not just its members' businesses but adds tremendous value to the entire downtown area in obvious and not-so-obvious ways. In managing several community events including The Village's holiday strolls and its signature annual Arts and Wine Festival, the LAVA deserves high praise. The LAVA has done much to add value to the visitor experience downtown and I've seen the improvement over the years.
