Went to see the Beethoven 5th. Performance was amazing and thoroughly enjoyed it. Reason for the 4 stars is because this place really needs an update. The theater is a bit run down, dated and uncomfortable. It seems or feels dirty. Performance again was super.

The Long Beach Symphony is truly a local treasure. Performances are at the Performing Arts Center and the Arena. We are so lucky to have live music in our beautiful city!

Very disappointing that This organization will now require proof of vaccination to concertgoers and will not allow a negative COVID test as an alternative. If the safety concern were about COVID then a negative test should be requested of all concertgoers, regardless of vaccination status, as we know that even vaccinated persons can transmit COVID. This also excludes our youth from attending such events. This is medical discrimination and not based on logic or equity.

As a musician, I feel that the level of musicianship is top notch and the musicality of the orchestra is incredible. There is a new energy in this ensemble since Maestro Eckart Preu took over as conductor and Music Director. I have never been disappointed with any performance, and I always learn something new from the pre-show talks.

June 8. The Season Finale. Beethoven's Ninth. Was that an errant note? Doesn't matter. Still a great experience. And a great note it was. Even Maestro Preu did some fancy footwork and shuffled a movement to create a lively encore. The Long Beach Symphony breaths life into each performance. The evening began with Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks (as Preu explained, what a zany premiere that was!) During intermisson we were able to have a conversation with James Bass, the artistic director of the Long Beach Camarata Singers. His participation in the preconcert lecture had been an insightful look into the personal evolution of a musician. The rest of the program, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor. So much has been written, listen to the link below and enjoy Even though I have a laundry list of NY celebrity sightings, I love spotting the Long Beach talent. A table of Symphony members preconcert at the Long Beach Cafe (street clothes not yet in formal wear [that might have been fun]). And the very informative, charming Rick, a Camarata member and choral director at Saint Martin de Tours Catholic Church, with whom we had a great postconcert chat. Music notes followed our path that evening.
