I had a very negative experience at the Elsinore 99cents store tonight with Manager Amanda. I went to this store at 845pm with my 8 year old son after he finished his dinner and ice cream. I needed to return items I had purchased for our young family and for my senior citizen dad who lives alone in case of harsh storm conditions. We did not use these items as did not need them, and I had been told that we could easily bring them back for return. We got into the only checkout line open. When we approached with our bags on the conveyor belt and our receipt, the cashier asked us to step aside so she could call the manager to process the return on another lane, while the cashier continued to help the growing line. We did so and waited for the manager to approach. When this manager, Amanda, came to the front, five minutes later and still with her AirPods visibly in her ears, she seemed almost appalled at our return request. She said there were no other registers open, that she would not be opening another register, and then aggressively told my son and I to go to the back of the line. I calmly explained that this was not fair as we had already waited in line once. Amanda then retorted that we had already been helped once and took the receipt I brought in as proof. That is when the cashier interjected to explain that we had brought the bags and receipt in with us. Amanda, corrected now, said we could process our return after the currently checking out customer. I made sure to say out loud that she had been unnecessarily aggressive. Amanda then began to process our return, but first started by telling me we would only receive store credit. I explained that I had previously returned items, similar in both item and amount, and had those amounts placed back on my credit card. Amanda quickly dismissed my concern, pointed to some language at the bottom of the receipt, and said that was the policy. I said ok and she began to scan my returning items. As this occurred, I leaned forward next to the credit card machine and began to look at my OfferUp messages. Yes, as a father of two, I make every dollar count, which includes shopping at 99cents stores and also finding free sandboxes for my kids off OfferUp. Manager Amanda, however, became even more aggressive. She told me to stop taking pictures of her. She said I had no right to do that. I explained that I was doing no such thing. I showed her my phone and then my most recent photo — a Facebook Screenshot. She continued on that I couldn’t take her picture. I placed my phone face up on the counter next to the credit card machine where I had leaned and raised my hands clearly above my head. I might have appeared to be a criminal. That is how Manager Amanda made me feel. I asked for her name and she gave it, before adding that she didn’t care if I complained. Odd that the manager of a store wouldn’t care about customer complaints? Manager Amanda embarrassed, humiliated and wrongfully accused me in her store, in front of my son, and obviously felt empowered to act however she wanted. I will never return to this location and will only visit 99cents stores until the store credit I received is exhausted. Manager Amanda ended my 30+ year relationship with 99cent stores.UPDATE: Called today 8/22 day after this incident to complain verbally to a manager. When manager answered phone, I asked for their name. They refused, then asked for my name. When I said my name was Joe, I again repeated my clear and calm request for their name. Again, they refused and asked who I was. When I said that I was a customer, they said ok and that they just wanted to make sure I wasn’t a “scammer”. Do 99cent stores receive many calls from “scammers”? I think asked for the managers name for a third and final time. They replied “Amanda”. I said that they were the manager I was calling to complain about, and then hung up. Will wait until I speak with a different manager or maybe just manager at different 99cent store who can help.

Yadira the cashier needs to learn that when you open up a new register and you ask a customer from a different line to come over, you asked the first customer from the line next to you. You don't ask the last customer. Why would the very last person in line get preference to be before anybody else that's been in line before them. Thanks, YDira
