I had been wanting to check this store out for a while and finally got around to it last week. What a selection! I could truly spend hours here, there's so much to sift through. Craig, the owner, was very nice. Quarters are a little tight, which makes it feel crowded if a lot of people are there. I was very impressed with the philosophy and poetry sections! Prices were incredibly reasonable also! I can't wait to be back!

Really great service! I was able to buy gift cards by phone and have them sent to a couple of friends. The lady who helped me could not have been nicer, felt like I was actually in a little neighborhood bookstore. My friends LOVE the place and are so happy with their gifts This is a real local business and they sell books what's not to love?!?

A nice little Book store. The owners were very friendly and super helpful. A large selection of used and many difficult to find books.Went there with some of my unused books and they checked it out on the spot. Received a good offer.Definitely coming back here for some of their deals and offers next time. Check this place out for yourself and you might find some treasures.

Enjoying a beautiful day of self care and decided to go to a local neighborhood book store to purchase a book. The owner seemed kind... at first. I asked where the romance section was (HUGE store full of books) and before I could even get my question out he quickly told me they don't have a romance section... mmm? Interesting?! I immediately felt unwelcome so I left! Maybe it was the melanin. Maybe it was the locs? All I can say is you can tell when people want your business.

Awesome used book store! Have donated books and purchased books from here. Why pay full retail? You could spend hours in here!

Small space stuffed with an eclectic range of books. A perfect example of a small, locsl bookstore. Get your hair cut next door and any kind of food and liquor within two blocks. Trolley stop on the doorstep, so go. Go now.

My first visit started as what I thought would be a quick weekday post-Swami's-lunch browse, but ended up leaving with a big bag of books, $25 lighter in the wallet, an hour and a half later. I could spend all afternoon in here. I love it. Will be back.

I LOVE Maxwells. My favorite place to buy and find books. Affordable for any students who are on a budget. They have a cat that hangs out in there too, super cute! The customer service is great, they are always so willing to go searching for the books I'm lookin for.

Maxwell's House of Books is a wonderful independent used book store in Downtown La Mesa area. They have floor to ceiling options for you, and it's a really charming shop. They have a resident cat that is always at the shop- he's a sweet 18 year old kitty. I love saying hi to him when I stop by. Keep in mind that you cannot bring your dog here because the cat is afraid of dogs. Before you stop by, make sure that you have quarters on hand for parking- it's all metered parking around downtown. There is a huge selection of books here of all genres- literature, history, sci-fi, self help, fiction, and everything in between. You can find the prices for each book on the first page, right hand side. I've never seen a book that costed more than $6, and if you're lucky, they'll have some free books set up outside on the sidewalk (they almost always do). If you forget your wallet, no worries, they take Venmo! Happy reading! :)

Very nice and polite people who run the establishment. I traded some books in and got a book I wanted with some cash. Doesn't get better, I recommend and definitely will be back.

Maxwell's is what you're thinking: Calming, used book smell and aura with classical music in the background. They're online and have 10,000 titles available. 20k more to add to this list I was told.HUGE Philosophy section: in the back, around the corner. Double sided, 6? shelves, 7' high. Fifteen different authors all about Marx. Huge section all about Russia. Small Vietnam War section. See pics. Page 200? Gulf of Tonkin...yeah didn't happen...Plenty of parking, just feed the meter and unless you know what you're looking for, you'll need two hours just to browse. Cat sleeping at checkoutSssshhhhh.Nice downtown location, get something to eat and read your book.

I've been to this bookstore a few times and I find the owners to be so kind and helpful. They have so much knowledge and selection, I've gotten a few vintage books from here for amazing prices. I definitely recommend this place if you're in the area, it's a very calming atmosphere
