I wanted to go, but there's a bunch of abandoned RVs and cars along the road to the tower. I felt like I was driving into a homeless encampment, I didn't feel safe driving my wife any further down the road.
I wasn't about to get carjacked by illegals or something.
EDIT: I saw the response. Fair enough. I'll try to come by the next time.

Whoever runs the gift shop thinks it's important to interject their politics into this great piece of western history. Rainbow flags, "white lies matter" shirts and divisive bumper stickers. Then they charge 15 dollars for stair access?. ..wow. I would skip it bigtime. They don't like white people apparently.

On our trip from Phoenix AZ to El Cajon CA we made a stop at the tower as always. There was a new t-shirt :). The owner told us that he might go to Italy. That would be a shame. He is very friendly and gave us advice to follow Old Highway 80. From this you can always go back to 8. This was really so. It was a great experience with beautiful scenery away from the big traffic. Thank you very much and greetings from Switzerland...

This is a one-time stop on the way to or from the desert. $10 fee per person to visit. Be sure to see the rock carvings and climb to the top of the tower for a view of the desert and Salton sea.

Very cool experience!
The tower needs cleaning and updates.
The entrance prior to the the official entrance is quite sketchy and I almost didn't drive past the junkyard / squatting collection.
Perhaps there could be an animal checklist that comes with our $9.50, for a fun way to find all of the painted creatures?

This place is a great little gem. My son and I hung out for almost 2 hours. Most of it was exploring the cave to the back of the tower.
The tower has great views of the area. The winds, though, were blowing hard but are not an issue once away from the tower. The tower is a crazy mixture of all sorts of curiosities and is fun to explore. The real fun is the rock caves. My son and I spent about an hour and a half exploring. Just be careful and do not get stuck like me. There are also a few dogs and a peacock living on the property. The current owner is also looking to sell. With enough money, it would make a great airbnb.
To go in the tower and cave, you have to get a ticket ($13 for the 2 of us). If you have the time, the rock caves and view are worth the stop.

I stopped by this Desert Tower on my way to Phoenix from SD.
I believe this location is part of SD as well. This tower is interesting. It is made out of small boulders alone the I8. I would mistaken this to be a light house if this was near the ocean. Inside, there's a circular near 360 degree window view of the outside. Inside is a small give soft with all kinds of wonderful stuff if you want to bring back a little souvenir.
On the outside, there's a boulder park you can walk up to. it's like a little mini caves and tunnels you can go through, but be careful with your steps.
There's also a opening with some picnic tables. it's great to just take a breather from the long drive, visit the tower and the boulder park, have some picnic before continuing the long journey.
Oh, by the way, the people there are just friendly.
Oh, one more thing. there's a donation box outside by the boulder park. Be sure to contribute a few greens for the great people that is keeping the place nice and clean. It cost money to flush your radiator water. you know.
