Honestly- only giving it a one-star in the hopes that someone with NPS will read. Most of the day was incredible- easy to book, on-time ferries, great audio tour and STUNNING park. I am not sure how best to get this feedbacK to the NPS that the ranger who welcomed us to the island (Jordy?) made multiple problematic statements in her 2-minute speech. Most notably, joking about how it was "ironic that Native Americans occupied the island looking for freedom." Disappointing, but not surprising, lack of respect from a federal employee. The exhibit honoring the 50 year anniversary of the occupation featured beautiful photography.

A great way to see the Rock! We decided to try this tour mid week when the crowds were down and ticket availability was high. It is a very well done tour that had docent led walks as well as an audio tour that was very comprehensive and educational. Whether a local or a tourist this is a must do on your SF Tour list.

Booked this cruise last minute. I would recommend booking it in advance if you have a specific day/time you are looking to go. There were a lot of times and dates sold out when we booked it, but since we were flexible it wasn't a big deal. One of the most inconvenient things is parking. There aren't many places to park in the area, and the parking spots that are available are extremely expensive. Most places were at least $30 for an entire day of parking. We lucked out and found a parking lot that was cheaper, but had to be out by 3PM. The process of getting ready to board is quick and organized. There are bathrooms, food and drinks in the little area by the cruise. The cruise itself is short and pretty cold/windy if you choose to sit on the top of the boat. Once arriving in Alcatraz, we pretty much did our own thing exploring the island. They give you a headset with a spoken tour, which we listened to for about 10 minutes then gave up. However, a lot of folks were really into the spoken tour, it just wasn't our thing. You can walk around the island and explore as much as you want, then hop on the cruise ship back to SF when you feel you've had enough. It is A LOT of walking, and a lot of uphill - so wear comfortable shoes!

Loved the tour! I invited a friend to the tour with me and we both enjoyed it. The audio's are great and help a better understanding of the history of the prison. We had a pretty good time. Thanks Alcatraz Cruises!

Gets you back and forth to Alcatraz quick and comfortable. Make sure to get your tickets in advance as they tend to sell out!!!

I have been to San Francisco several times and always have wanted to take the tour of Alcatra and finally did this time. You will want to be sure to purchase your tour tickets and make your reservation at least a month in advance as it books up very quickly. There are also some discounts if coupled with other attractions or through the City Pass, but otherwise the cost of the tour itself is not terribly expensive. Parking near the pier can be costly and hard to find so be sure to scout it out early or consider an Uber drop off. Buy some snacks and drinks before you go as there are not many selections on the ferry and once over on the island. The departure and ride over was convenient and smooth, but heard it can be a bit choppy on windy days. Once over on the island you father at a podium area for some instruction, but you can skip if you like and startup the hill to where you obtain the audio headsets which I highly recommend! It guides you on a comprehensive exploration of the prison and grounds, once complete you can still wander and then buy a few things in the souvenir shop before catching the ferry back We enjoyed the experience very much and would encourage anyone to take the tour and experience a piece of history!

A truly great tour and very informational! I would HIGHLY suggest purchasing tickets a couple weeks prior to arrival as this is a very popular tour and walk ups are far and few in between. You arrive 30 minutes early to board the ferry which has an upper outside deck and lower inside deck if it is cold weather. The ferry ride is only about 15 minutes to get to Alcatraz Island. Once you get off, you are greeted by the park ranger, given some ground rules, and off you go on a self guided tour! You will want to set aside about 4 hours in total from leaving Pier 33 to returning as there is a lot to see. You can take it at your own pace. It is about $40 per person for tickets. There are a lot of steep walkways and steps so wear comfortable walking shoes. The cell audio tour was astonishing and really eye opening about the entire island. The island is well maintained and looks very decrepit and a bit morbid, but it adds to the entire experience. There are restrooms and you may bring water bottles onto the island, but no food or additional drinks so keep that in mind when planning. The ferry departs the island every half hour for return and again it's a quick 15 minute trip back. Sit on the top for some beautiful views of San Fran's skyline.
