Douglas DeVivo sold my husband and I a large collage piece titled 'Mid-Century Modern' from his Blue Door Gallery in Guerneville, CA. He boxed it for transport to our home 3 hours away. Upon unboxing at home, we found the collage to have several defects including a warped frame and canvas (see photos). It would be impossible for him to have boxed this and not known about the defects. He agreed to send a check for repairs, but after months the check has not arrived. Unfortunately, we are having to take legal action to hold him to his word.

What an unexpected treat to run across this artist run space in downtown Guerneville! The owner is a high energy, talented and creative individual that will make you feel like a part of the "Inner Circle" of collectors as he explains his work to you. It's a visual feast as well as an educational experience. From my background as a museum administrator, the work is totally contemporary and resolved. Very complex compositions, created by layering various collage elements into paper based surfaces that are built up over and over until the each composition is resolved. The work is at once, honest, pure energy, colorful, complex and definitely part of current trends being pursued in major art centers. All this in Guerneville...a place one does not expect to see fine art of this caliber! Stop by and enjoy!

This is one of my favorite galleries in Guerneville! Doug Devito the owner and artist is such a nice guy! How art is amazing! He is extremely talented. One top of the myriad of interesting pieces of art to choose from every time I walk in he hands me a brush or had an art project for the public to participate in which is so much fun! His art and gallery express who he is as a person; fun, colorful, happy and inclusive! His art is inspiring and a perfect addition to any home or business! He teaches classes at his gallery and holds events there. I'm hoping to have a dinner party in the space in the future!

The Blue Door Gallery features mainly collages by Doug DeVivo and fabric art by Mary Livingston and has become the most popular stop for those perusing Guerneville's growing number of chiefly artist-owned galleries. First Fridays is 'interactive night' when visitors ae encouraged to participate in art projects on their own or with other people. Doug furnished supplies and is an excellent and nurturing coach, and has years of experience in various means of creativity. It's unique, in a constant state of flux and the more people stare at Doug's collages the more they see and the more active their imaginations and perception become. Doug lived and studied art in Asia for several years and is a serious and accomplished student of his craft. He always takes the time to treat patrons like honored guests and they generally leave knowing more than they did when they waltzed in. Doug and Mary often have musicians and occasional plays which add dimension to the experience.
