Had the pleasure of attending a Black Excellence function in San Luis Obispo at which Papa Jay's catered. I am not a huge fan of smoked bbq( which is everywhere now). Papa Jays is not that. Every item they made was beyond delicious: ribs, chicken, hot links, creole rice, Mac n cheese, beans. The owners were friendly, accommodating and treated us like family. Wish I lived closer to frequent their place. Locals please support!

It used to be a decent place to go for something different. In November they said they would remodel and be open in a month. Now its almost March and not open and certainly don't see any remodeling being done. Semms like they are flakekier then the biscuits.

Family owned which we love and the best fried chicken we have ever had. A little spicy if you are sensitive to that but honestly amazing! Be prepared to wait (call in on your way) because it is all made from scratch. Definitely worth the wait!!

We got the football platter because we wanted to have food through the weekend, it was more than we bargained for. The food was excellent, and will definitely be back.

Feels like home immediately upon entering. Papa Jay is super helpful and has a kind energy. I got the fried catfish nuggets, Mac n cheese, and potato salad. The potato salad was good although I found eggshells throughout. Mac n cheese was so good! A little bit of heat in it too! The catfish nuggets were big and fried perfectly. I'm absolutely coming back to try the rest of the menu and to share some laughs with Papa Jay!

I had a craving for fried chicken but didn't want to cook it. So had been wanting to try this place and ordered the fried chicken dinner. Well I was disappointed to say the least. The chicken was heavily breaded. and salty, the sides were ok.I would have been better off going to store and buying and cooking,my,own chicken, at least itWould have been better, by far.

There is better bbq within a 20 mile radius, and you won't wait for an hour for one plate of food. Their menu and recipes would be better with higher quality ingredients .the foodall the meat was b cut, small, local, or perhaps even offal.some of our food tasted like it was cooked over lumberthe ribs were desiccated, which indicates dry curing in the open air, so we chucked em.dry chicken, likely cooked in batches offsite, as stated over lumber (concerning)educated or learned or experienced cooks know why this is dangerous and shouldn't be practiced by non-professionals. This can be hazardous to ingest, but it is indicative of a region and small businesses affected by the environmentalist embargo of every business near the Guadalupe dunes. A sad sordid affair.

We went here based on Yelp reviews. We were driving home on the 101, and noted we didn't often eat in Santa Maria. Papa Jay's is 8-10 miles off the 101, not bad. Fun to see a bit of Santa Maria and into Guadalupe. I ordered the Tri-tip Poor Boy sandwich, and my wife had my side order of red beans and rice. I thought the poor boy was delicious. I think this may have been the first poor boy style sandwich I have eaten. Messy! Very wet. The tri-tip was very tender. First red beans and rice for my wife. She said also very good. The owners were very nice, pleasant and friendly. We would eat here again if we're ever in Guadalupe.

Sorry to say after years of eating at this establishment I'm very disappointed. I called in my order a 4 pm, they were just about out of everything. I usually get bbq chicken, delicious! Out, so I got fried chicken, tasted like fish charged me more than was posted on the menu. Not sure I'll go back

Catfish nuggets and cornbread were good! Mac and cheese wasn’t as fresh as it should have been. Overall pretty good little restaurant.
