The place is nice enough and generally clean. However they charged me an additional $20.77 for tenant insurance without any prior notification (which is illegal in California). They require tenant's carry insurance or they will add in this charge, and I'm fine with that. I had previously given them a copy of my homeowners policy in order to avoid this charge. When my policy renewal came up, they never asked me for my new policy. Instead they just added this charge to my account without notification or my consent- a VERY shady practice! If they had just sent me an email or letter asking for my insurance renewal, I would've sent them my new policy to avoid the charge. But they never did that. When I saw the charge on my credit card, I sent my renewed policy to the manager at Old Barn and asked them to refund (or credit me) for the $20.77. However they refused to give me a credit. I asked the manager to ask their boss to refund the money, and they told me they would. But I never heard another word. So they basically stole money from me. I would not rent from here again because of the lack of communication and shady practices.

After the initial "first 3 months 50% off" deal, they raised my monthly rent by $34 / month for a small sized unit! PLUS.. what they don't tell you anywhere on the website is that you are required to purchase their insurance (add $23/mo for my size unit). At other storage facilities I've been able to provide my own proof of insurance. I feel duped. The facility is very well kept and maintained, but not worth what I'm paying for a small unit.

As a long time customer I appreciate the safe, clean, well lit space(s) and the kind respectful Owners and Staff. While going through difficult life changes that require a storage facility one of the upsides is Old Barn Storage. Thank You.

Clean, up to date, well lit, rodent free. The only issue I had was immediately taken care of; and I recieved both an email and a voicemail within a few hours.
It’s definitely safe and secure - trust me - I make 2-3 runs each week to my unit; spending 30 minutes to an hour each time, due to my ever changing inventory and restocking for my business; and usually within 15 minutes, someone rolls up in the golf cart asking if “everything is ok…” (which can be frustrating sometimes because of how often I'm there - but at the same time makes me confident in the security and monitoring of the place.)
The main down side is the relatively high cost, compared to market prices:::: I pay around $130/month for a 5x7 indoor non climate control unit.
Overall generally good experience.

My brother's belongings were placed in a storage unit at Old Barn two years ago when he was admitted to a care facility for long term care. After two years, his condition will not allow him to live independently so the decision was made to clear out his storage unit. My husband planned to drive his truck and trailer from our home in Washington State to California to remove my brother's belongings. I called the office of Old Barn storage to ask about the procedure to allow us to gain access to the unit and after it was cleared the contract could be cancelled. I explained that my brother is bed-bound and cannot leave his care facility. The woman on the phone interrupted me and said "I need you to stop talking and be quiet so I can tell you our policy." She then continued in the same rude manner for the rest of the conversation. She insisted that my brother needed to come in person to remove his belongings, and she told me that she can't let just anyone come in and "steal from the units." After several tries to get her to understand the situation, she finally told me he needed to provide a copy of his driver's license, sign a note stating who is allowed to access his storage unit, and have the paperwork notarized. We did all that, including having to pay for the notary. When my husband showed up with the truck and trailer, no one questioned him or asked for ID, he went straight to the unit and emptied it and then told the office it was cleared. The person in the office was not the woman I spoke to over the phone, and was very pleasant, thankfully!

Very clean and secure facility. Much more expensive than I would like, however OBSS is in a central convenient location in Grass Valley.

I had originally left a 5 star review, because the staff is friendly and I assumed our things would be safe in storage there. I have now deleted that review and am leaving this one, after going to remove our items for the move into a new house….and finding our unit infested with rats. Everything covered with rat droppings, rat hair all over the floor amidst the droppings, expensive wood furniture gnawed on and ruined, rat droppings and nests inside boxes, and the contents of boxes destroyed. Old Barn management takes no responsibility or liability for this infestation or any damage, even though we discovered a section of the weather stripping at the bottom of the door was missing, and this is apparently how the rats got in. Heartbreaking. Prior to this incident, we had to move from another storage unit, same facility, due to water leaking in, either from rain or from a pipe in the sprinkler system leaking. We should have understood then that these units are not being assessed for integrity or maintained properly. Fair warning, DO NOT STORE YOUR POSSESSIONS AT THIS FACILITY!!! UNLESS YOU DON’T MIND THEM BEING DAMAGED AND DESTROYED.
