Papaya TreeSouthern CaliforniaThe Papaya Plant (Carica Papaya), looks like a tree but is actually an oversized herb. It originated in Central America but is well adapted to Southern California as long as it's protected from frost.Younger trees bear more fruits, and aficionados like Fuentes start new plants from saved seeds every year. The Papaya fruit is good for our Digestive System.

Referred to Alex at Papaya Nursery by two other large well known nurseries when looking to get some fruit trees when other places either didn't have the smaller (dwarf sized) versions of what we wanted, and what they had were over $250.00 for a 15 gal.Alex was so informative and his small, but packed little nursery was filled with many species of trees, some of which I had never heard of.We bought a 5 gal. baby banana tree(!!) and a small Sundowner apple tree both of which cost under 85.00 each. We brought them "home" in the back seat of our sedan. Now it is 5 months later (and I haven't killed either of them) and my apple tree has 6-7 tiny apples and the banana tree gets one large new leaf every 3 weeks and by next year we will have some bananas!!Alex is such a personable gentleman and he's very helpful. The to one attention to all my concerns gave me the confidence to start our tiny orchard.Thank you again Alex?

This place is a gem. I tried to go a year ago when I was in the area, but because they are same day appointment only, the timing didn't work out. Anyways, I'd been scouring the internet looking for someone who sells lucuma trees. Alex sells them (and after lots of research it seems he may be the only person in CA who does), so I made another trip down south. Totally worth driving a few hundred miles. I wish I had more room in the car to buy other things! Expect to spend a couple hours here... Alex and his dad are very passionate about what they do. If you are passionate about rare plants you'll likely want to stick around and see where their knowledge takes you. We got to taste test fresh longon, jaboticaba, and were sent home with a few miracle fruit and bay leaves. What a fun experience. I'll be back next time I'm in the LA area.

Alex was extremely helpful and informative when I had a million questions about planting fruit trees. As a novice, I had no idea where to even begin; Alex took his time 1 on 1 teaching me without making me feel stupid. He is very passionate about his exotic fruits and has quiet a large selection, especially of tropical fruits. I ended up purchasing a unique variety of star fruit tree and he told me to feel free to message him any time I have questions. Can't thank him enough, I will definitely return for more trees in the near future.

This is truly a gem of a backyard nursery! I came in looking for inspiration... and found it... in full measure!Alex takes one client at a time and only by appointment. While this may seem a bit strange at first, but there is a very good reason for it: YOU WILL GET HIS UNDIVIDED ATTENTION! -- combined with his wealth of knowledge and the amazing trees they have to show, this in itself is easily worth the visit!I ended up with a Jamaican Allspice tree (2 feet tall). Super healthy and well nurtured plant... can't wait to see it grow to the size Alex has in the yard.I/we will definitely be back soon!-- Kevin

Excellent serviceI was looking to buy a cherimoya tree and I found Alex online. When I called, he was super nice, patient and professional. I scheduled a pick up time and date. When I met Alex, he shared a lot of planting tips that nobody else has given me before. When you buy a tree, it's a long term investment and you want to buy a quality tree and varietal that is healthy and was taken care of properly even before buying it. That's what I found with my purchase with Alex. His expertise and knowledge is unfounded anywhere else. He was also available to help via phone and email after I made a mistake with planting. He gave me excellent pointers and I was able to save it.Highly recommend purchasing from him!

Just visited this amazing nursery of fruit varieties I have never even heard of before. Alex and his father have 36 years of knowledge and experience with these exotic fruit trees. He has grown many other types in the past so he knows about pretty much everything. If it exists, he probably has grown it! In early August, not everything is in season, most have already been picked but I got to try the banana and the “panache” figs, both of which were delicious. I will take his word for it that the other types of fruit he sells are amazing as well!

This is a small family run business and from my novice perspective, they specialize in more rare fruit trees. Don’t be misled by the name. We walked out with African Gold Papaya, Tropic Snow Peach and Star Fruit “Super Star” fruit trees. It was a most enjoyable and educational experience. If you are looking for something give Alex a call. He will tell you if he has what you are looking for and stopping by will be a most educational experience. At least it was for me.

Alex Silber is truly the Southern California Tree Whisperer. He is passionate about helping you find the right tree for your space and micro-climate. He was generous with his advice and helped me pick a beautiful Longon Tree. I can't wait for first harvest! I especially appreciate that Alex shared advice for choosing and planting trees he didn't have in stock, and I purchased from a different nursery. That was above and beyond the call. Would happily visit and purchase again.

Over the last few years I've bought over twenty trees from Alex at papaya tree nursery. I have to say, the grand majority of them are doing great. The trees at papaya tree nursery are loved and nurtured from day 1, and the care instructions and ongoing advice from Alex keeps them alive and thriving. I appreciate Alex's enthusiasm for rare fruit very much, and I feel like I've found somebody that I can share this healthy obsession with! I highly recommend you go visit papaya tree nursery. I'm sure you'll see (and maybe eat!) some fruits you've never heard of. Highly recommended!

My wife and I finally visited Papaya Tree Nursery yesterday as we had been looking for passionfruit vines and it was an awesome experience. Alex was super helpful and passionate about everything he spoke about. We ended up also leaving with a Babaco tree so we are looking forward to that growing and fruiting! We'll definitely be back as there were many other unique fruits there that I know we'd love to add to our land one day! Go check it out when you get a chance. It's really cool.

We found this gem of a nursery while looking for a papaya tree this past weekend. Located in a residential area in the north San Fernando valley, we were so surprised when we were ushered into the backyard which was meticulously organized into a beautiful nursery of tropical fruit trees. The owner, Alex, was very knowledgeable as was his father David. They claim they graft their own trees finding the sweetest strains and matching them up with hardy root stock so you get superior performance out of the plants. Open 7 days a week and easy to get to, prepare to spend a little time here and get ready to learn some stuff!!! Big thanks to Alex for all the education and genuine care and consideration for us. Will definitely be going back to snag a star fruit soon.
