I've used Barney and Russum Animal clinic since about 2008, they have always had excellent vets and techs! Their reception staff has varied from time to time due to influxes in customers and the phones ringing off the hook I'm sure, none the less they have always been able to a maintain professionalism and decorum. That however has changed, the receptionist (or technician I am not sure) must have been experiencing a bad day. She was rude and unnecessarily so. Full disclosure, I was asking for a medication that is a prescription without being in the guidelines of my pets physical/ check up which was due at the end of August. Since I was unable to schedule they are unwilling to provide medication which my dog has been using successfully. It would have been better to make an exception as I have been a long standing customer, but minimum it is appropriate to stick to professionalism and not turn to snark and sass when stating policy. If you want to be treated with warmth and kindness, this particular office may not be for you. I have never had an experience like this before at this vet, and hopefully this one particular staff member learns to control her attitude. This has been a wonderful place to bring your pet in the past.
Per advice of the snarky staff today, we've found another vet. Thank you for the tip, and do your best to remember that delivery is as important as content.

This is a long over-due review. Let me tell you about the PTSD I now suffer with ever since this office went off a cliff. I had another nightmare & have finally decided I needed to voice this publicly.
We use to love Barney & Russum, but things seemed to change drastically after one of the main doctors retired years ago. They have cared for 5 cats & one dog between multiple households within our family. I use to drive an hour out of my way just so my cat could be seen there. But things changed & what we experienced was horrifying.
Aside from the 24/7 care incident that resulted in major bladder surgery because our cat chewed his catheter off overnight (no overnight staff to monitor patients). Aside from when a tech with zero tact told us keeping our other cat alive was torture when we had been trying to find out what was wrong with him; we were blindsided by a terrible cancer that we had only minutes earlier just learned about, we were considering our options when he gave his opinion in a condemning manner. These aren't the incidents that drove us away permanently & still give me nightmares all these years later.
When one of our cats was getting old, he became diabetic & was losing his sight. We used medication when it was mild, but eventually it just became too much & was time to let him go. We brought him here to be euthanized peacefully, what happened was the exact opposite. They did not warn us, we were not prepared for what happened. They did not use the method most are use to, the series of injections that are typical of what you expect when you go to have a loved fur baby put down. They told us it would be painless, before unsuccessfully injecting air into my cats veins. My cat yowled in pain & did not die, so they did it again. I cannot unhear my cats pain, I cannot unsee what they did. I am still very disturbed by what they did. This was not humane, it was cruel to both my cats last minutes of life & our families memory of how his life ended. We loved him and now feel a guilt that can't be cured because we trusted this office to care for our pets. This is not how you care for a life!!!
DO NOT EVER ALLOW THEM TO INJECT AIR AS A FORM OF EUTHANASIA. THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL.

If you have a FRENCH BULLDOG BEWARE
I called at 10:48am and spoke with a receptionist, explaining the current state of my French bull dog, Enzo. Informing your clinic of his extreme discomfort and complete lack of movement in his back legs causing me to rush him to the emergency vet clinic at 5:30am. Previous to this horrific event, I made it clear to the receptionist that he had been administered a vaccine shot of leptospirosis by one of your veterinarian’s in between his shoulder blades (my daughter and I first handedly saw this administered) on August 15th. Then on August 19th, we had an emergency walk-in as we believed the vaccine shot due to its placement to be the reason for his change in behavior. He would not go down some of our steps. Follow my daughter around the house. He would not eat. He had diarrhea. He threw up. He would shake when lying down. And his injection site was clearly swollen. My daughter informed the same doctor who administered the vaccine of these changes on the 19th making it aware we believed there was a correlation between the vaccine and his symptoms. We were given a basic blood test, pain reliever shot, temperature check and she touched around injection site. Less than 24 hrs of the walk in, Enzo could not move his back legs and was in deep discomfort so we rushed him to the emergency clinic. After a few hours we were informed that his injection site was the main location of the swelling. And to our surprise the emergency vet was shocked that a vaccine shot would be administered in the back when that is not an injection spot for such vaccines. Again, we vocalized all of this information and extreme concern to the receptionist pleading for more information. And the very least a call back from the manager or the owner of Barney & Russum. We understood that your clinic was busy and understaffed as we waited during your work hours for a call. But were very shocked and absolutely devastated that not ONE person from the clinic called back during work hours or after hours or made any effort of sincerity through an email, call, or voicemail after being clearly aware of Enzo terrible state. This only grew our concern as to why we were not given any genuineness and care over this situation being that your line of work is to care for these beloved pets. We previously believed your institution was one that “share the same goal – Ensuring your animal companion is healthy and happy” and “to provide exceptional vet care for your pets.” However, with this lack of communication and basic respect we now know we were wrong.

WARNING//MY DOGS BACK LEGS DO NOT WORK AFTER A VISIT TO THIS VET. Very poor customer service, do not take your Frenchie here!!! They are injecting vaccines into their spines and our dog has been on a steady decline all week, this has never happened until we took him to this vet. We called the office looking for, at the bare minimum, an apology and instead we were given very poor customer service and my dogs back legs are not working. We need answers. This is not right. Do not let your beloved pet end up like my dog.

If you live in Solano County this is the vet to go to. With decades of experience, they’ve never led me wrong. The vets are always on time, caring and knowledgeable. The ladies up front are so friendly and nice to talk to. I’ve taken multiple pets here for end of life care and everyone is so respectful and they make sure your pet and you are comforted during the process.

So this vet is a very good vet and very helpful. An definitely try to help clients who can't afford there bills with payment plans. But i just recently had a problem with a employee named makayla, i don't know if im spelling her name correctly. But she has terrible attitude, demeanor is terrible, an how she speaks to the clients is terrible. So with a establishment like that my only regards to them is they should definitely get her some more training. Because she can rub somebody the wrong way and everybody won't have the same patience i had with her an somebody might actually react an do something you that girl. But other then that i like everybody else in that establishment is very nice and helpful and know how to carry themselves. So i really hope they fix that problem and i don't think makayla needs to be fired but she definitely needs some more training with dealing with clients because her attitude is terrible and that mouth is to smart for me for somebody that knew nothing about the situation or my pet. I hope she gets the help she needs or the love she is missing at home somewhere else then a bad attitude at work an letting it out on others because her personal life.

Everyone that I've ever spoken to at this office is absolutely incredible. I am so grateful to have them as a resource. I always feel like they go above and beyond and genuinely care about my dogs and their well-being. I do wish they had longer hours or were open on the weekend so that I could have more access but I understand and still appreciate them!

It's hard to get a timely appt. because the vets are very good. Our vets for over 40 years! Recently decided to close on weekends. That meant bringing my dog for emergency treatment at UCD. Oy! Over $1000 !! Twice in 1 year! Thank goodness for pet insurance or we would be broke! Impossible to find any vet open on weekends. But Dr Russum is the best vet in Solano County so we are grateful when he is available.
