Has been an excellent gym for my [almost] 9 year old son. Joined last month, everyone has been very friendly and helpful. My son excitedly runs from the car to the gym's door every time. I I view it as a no-frills, classic boxing gym, ideal for kids who are self driven. The owner stressed at the beginning, this is NOT a babysitting gym for parents who want their kids to learn boxing. It's the total opposite of little league baseball. That said, if your kid wants to learn how to box, and eventually get in the ring, I can't think of a better "true" boxing gym for kids. They have some excellent trainers & junior boxers who've been here for many years and clearly love boxing. They have all sorts of traditional boxing equipment, with an outdoor ring and an indoor ring. Because it's a non-profit, and only open Mon - Thr 5-7:30pm, the monthly membership costs are minimal. In short, it's great for certain kids, but not ideal for everyone.

My son has been lucky enough to be part of the Jerry Ortiz Memorial Boxing gym family for the last three years. The kids are amazing , hard working individuals. The coaches see them as family and go the extra mile to train and work with them. After a long day at work the coaches fight traffic to get to El Monte and train their team. There's no free time the coaches spend their weekends scheduling sparring training with other gyms. Thank you for teaching our kids HARD WORK-DEDICATION-AND SACRIFICE

As much as I wanted to love this place, it just wasn't for us. I signed up my son and after a month I took him out. The trainers stand around and mostly just watch, on my sons FIRST DAY he was being helped by another YOUNG child. None of the trainers helped him his first day which was so sad to just see my son kind of floating around. No one taught him the stance, the correct way to punch, correct movements or anything? He would just copy what others were doing. The owner said they only train those that are good or those who show they want it, but how would my son even show he wants it if he's so lost and confused as to what to do? After about a week my son lost interest due to lack of interaction and knowledge. He was getting nowhere just continued to float around. Which is super disappointing since we enrolled him there to learn defense, courage and motivation due to him being bullied in school. We ended up enrolling him in classes where the trainer has one on one training with him and he's shown more progress in one week as to one month at this gym.

The youth boxing program at this gym is by far the best in Southern California. I have a teenage son that currently trains at this gym & he loves it. I've seen my son's grades go up, along with his self confidence & level of discipline. All the kids are very respectful to others & there's absolutely no bullying going on at the gym. About 35% of the boxers that train here are female, 4 are ranked top 5% in the nation, one of them is ranked #1 in the world. We recently had 2 boxers win the prestigious silver gloves national tournament championship, one was a female. You must be between 8-19 years of age to join. Schedule an appointment or walk in anytime. Ask for Mike Ortiz to join, he runs the program.
