I wanted to buy some fruit here because I had previously had good experiences with this chain and couldn't find it at the Trader Joe's around the corner (where the service was absolutely top notch!)... I left my previous purchase with an employee Self-service checkouts (which carry me with all my luggage - I'm on a low-budget trip around the world, i.e. everything and, if possible, in a redundant version with me so that I can sleep and cook outside in 3 seasons - consisting of a 65 + 20l hiking backpack and an Ortlieb stuff sack on a luggage trolley - and said nothing about it). However, when I had just reached the fruit department, a security guard told me that it was not allowed to enter the market with a backpack. I explained to him that I just wanted to buy some fresh fruit. In fact, I was already standing in front of the refrigerator compartment and was about to reach for a pack of blueberries. I asked him rhetorically (really rhetorically from my point of view!) if I could take out a pack. But to my amazement, he told me to follow him directly and leave the market. Well... said, done.
Afterwards I sat outside at one of three tables with integrated chairs. I used the Wi-Fi (not even Safeway's, mind you, because a neighboring market's was stronger) to plan my route for the day in SF and had a quick breakfast.
Now you can guess what happened three times... The same security guard showed up and told me that I wasn't allowed to sit there! Behind me an older gentleman sat at another of the tables. He didn't say anything about that.
Afterwards I was really unsettled. Was it just an exception that I was allowed to go into a Safeway with my luggage in Seattle?
But neither in another branch in San Francisco, nor in two different branches in Los Angeles (where they are called Vons but otherwise look the same and use the same app) did ANYONE speak to me about my luggage.
This raises the question for me as to whether the rule in question really existed or whether it was an exception for people in transit and therefore clearly not locals in appearance...
If that is the case, I can only assume that my own experiences were passed on without reflection (the security guard was dark-skinned). Of course, I wouldn't describe such behavior as professional, but I'm still grateful for this shared experience because that's what this trip is all about for me. To get to know the lives of simple, poor people in the eyes of the average Central European, who are often disadvantaged compared to our possibilities.

Parking lot ? is huge, so even when busy, it can still accommodate your car. Store is clean, and stuff is helpful. They have 6 self-checkout machines, so that's a huge help if your running in to get only a few items.
They have a full-service Wells Fargo bank ? inside, and a full-service Starbucks ☕️.
Self check-out jas barriers to help prevent theft. In order to leave, you have to scan your receipt.

This place has given me, my mom, and my sister problems everytime we go to Safeway in Westlake. Most of the cashiers are rude and sloppy. Sometimes even the people behind the meat section are cold, rude, or sometimes insane. There was a time that my mom and my sister wanted to get some cut up meat and the front lady started to scream at them for no reason at all. The lady even called the manager, which he ended up not being the manager, but just a worker.
There have been other workers who've followed my sister and my mom in the past like they're going to steal something but they were just shopping. While other people were stealing behind the security guards back. But that's not all, cashiers always try to rip off my mom with the prices and they get mad when my mom catches them. They get mad at her and try to steal her money but they never get mad when other shoppers are stealing in front of their faces which has happened when I shop with my mom sometimes.
But this is some of the details that have happened in the past. Today, was the day that an incident happened that's given me the reason to write all of this. Today, is June 1st, 2024, a Saturday, my mom was paying for her food that she shopped with her hard money that she worked for. She asked for bags to a young boy, maybe Hindu, which he replied to it. But how he was handling her food was so impulsing. He was grabbing the food and stuffing it in the bags. He didn't put them in correctly and some of the food got crushed. But that wasn't all, he started to throw thingd in the bag and was rude about counting the change like he was throwing it too in the case register. The bags were messed up wnd crushed. It got so bad that I had to fix them.
There were also signs that he ripped the plastic bags which one of his co-workers, a older lady, noticed that they were broken. He was talklng back to my mom and even was going to through the recipient at my mom like he didn't want to deal with her anymore. She confronted him about the matter which hid attitude changed. Going from being rude and talk backing at my mom to doing face that he didn't do anything wrong. What made it worse is that his co-worker got into the situation, which lead for him to hold his line back just to get into a situation that he was no part of. He was starting to talk back at my mom and even replied to "My cashier" about his co-worker. He wasn't the manager so he had no reason to even say that. He acted like he was the manager of the place which he wasn't and started to ignore his customers.
They were starting to gang up on my mom but my mom confronted back at them and will inform Corporation (Texas) to report what happend today. It was so uncalled for and insulting towards her. That cashier was assaulting my mom's food and that other cashier wanted to start trouble which he had no business on. That cashier was a young tall Asian boy. It's so sad that Safeway Westlake is rude, cold, insulting, stealers, and arrogant narcissistic workers who have no business of working I places like thus.
So sad and disgusting!!!!!!!!

Ive been coming here all my life, this is the first time this happened. the 1 star is for this specific experience:
Im at self checkout doing my thing and the worker comes and immmediately fills out the customer survey that is meant for me, the customer. the worker gives high ratings for MY experience, and proceeds to say “thank you for filling out our survey.”
i ask her isn’t it weird she’s pretending to be me to fill out the survey?? she replies “i just do what my manager tells me.”
essentially the worker is gaming the rating system. she pretended to be me and expected me to just be ok with that. im in disbelief that the worker and the manager (if she’s telling the truth here) are being dishonest, as part of the job!! wilddd

For anyone applying to this Safeway store: Stay wary
P.S. I don't want to sound in any way condicending or suggesting for no one to work here, but with the process of working here, I dont think I was take seriously. Which hurt.
So I got a call today with no one actually stating their name but they were interested in me. I decided to call back just to get yelled at when I simply asked to repeat something again, and to hear they would call me when they're interested. Like what?
Let me tell you this is my first time Ive applied for a big corporation. I don't feel like I was taken seriously, nor given an opportunity to get the job. If my ethnicity is an issue to you, I don't think that's a place for you to judge. Please do better, to whoever was the employer for this branch.
To anyone ready this, thank you for hearing my story.

Overcharged me. $1.99 box of cereal rang up at $3.99, and they wouldn't credit me even though I explained the location is far from home and I am unlikely to return, even though I paid with credit and used my safeway card and the overcharge shows on my safeway account. So they get a $25 chargeback fee, and this bad review. Bad business and bad customer service.

Expired food on shelves. All the employees hate working here and the hate the manager. Skip the deli. Ambika will just say turkey doesn’t exist because she doesn’t feel like working. Deli employees prioritize standing around gossiping and texting.
Waited 38 minutes because the staff wanted to stand around doing nothing. Ambika seems to hate taking deli orders. Pointed to a sandwich on their menu and she said it didn’t exist. Eventually put JUST turkey and mayo into 1/4 of a bread roll after she was done texting and the line got really long. There were 3 other people standing around doing nothing at the deli. 38 minutes later Ambika claims the sandwiches posted on their sign don’t exist. I asked the other guy standing there and he told me to wait! After 38 minutes! Wait? while he was texting on his phone using the same gloves he’s touching his hair, face, clothes and all the food with. Spoke to the manager and her solution was just to tell me to go back in line or buy an expired sandwich they have on shelves. The manager is really as bad as everyone says. I knew I should’ve left instead of waiting for her when the cashiers said she was useless and lazy. This is the worse Safeway in the Bay Area. All the yogurt parfaits at the entrance were expired. Their packaged microwave plates aren’t sealed like other Safeway locations. Most of the ready made sandwiches were expired also. Left with nothing after waiting more than 45 minutes. The manager was trying to hard sell me one of their expired sandwiches that are packaged since she knows they’re all past their sell by date. The most disgusting people work here.

Depending on which Safeway you go to some will have items others don't. Some are smaller and cramped compared to others. Overall, though, you can pretty much find your shopping needs here.

As a Safeway app and rewards member I typical go here for the convenience and whatever specials are advertised. Located at Westlake mall, this location has ample parking space. Typical to most chain supermarkets, the customer service can be hit or miss. If you can find them. But when you do, for the most part they'll help you the best they can. And the staff do their best for restocking items and keeping the place well maintained. In terms of pricing, it's better to get the rewards card since you'll save a noticeable amount over the non-member prices.

This is my weekly neighborhood grocery store. I stop here every week, but I have not gone into the store in over 3 years. I exclusively use Drive Up & Go, I order online and the staff brings it to my car. It's doesn't get easier than that unless it's delivered The staff is alway very nice and friendly.
