Nine years ago I moved to the East Bay with my family & began the process of trying to find activities to put my kids in. In searching around I started to get discouraged because I was priced out of pretty much every activity I could find. Until my neighbor recommended CYC & I am forever grateful to her for that. Once I looked further into the sports offered in addition to the affordable price, I knew that we would be members for a long time. Our CYC journey began with my son, he didn’t know what he was interested in so we started trying out a couple of different sports. First, trying taekwondo & eventually he switched over to wrestling. Although he isn’t a member anymore due to his lack of interest in sports, I was thrilled that there was a place for him to try out a few different things & it didn’t cost me a lot & there was no long term commitment for him.As soon as my youngest turned three years old we started enrolling her in activities at CYC as well. She has taken classes in dance (tap/ballet), soccer, gymnastics, wrestling & a few years ago she found her passion in cheer. Now she is in her fourth year on one of CYC’s competitive cheer teams. In addition to practice, she takes a tumbling class, flyers class, a strength & conditioning class & gets private lessons from one of her fantastic coaches twice a month. We are at CYC four days a week, you would think that would be enough, but it's not! She eagerly awaits the two Fridays a month she can go to an open gym that is hosted by the cheer program. She has also attended several summer camps for cheer. She absolutely loves being at the gym & spending time with her CYC family, whether it is hanging out before, after or during her activities or while we are on the road at their competitions. It is truly that, a family. Not only does CYC have a great selection of classes to choose from but they also care about their members as a whole. The staff & coaches are so kind and helpful. Every interaction I’ve had with any member of the staff has been positive & I am so impressed by how they try to learn of all the members' names, so they can address them personally. It really makes you feel like your child is a part of their family. In addition to everything I’ve said above, I love that kids can come here and get help with their schoolwork. Although my children have never utilized the AE programs I have always been thrilled that it was there as an option.CYC plays such a pivotal role in our community. In a time when things were uncertain and crazy, CYC remained a constant in my family’s lives. The staff at CYC did an amazing job pivoting when everything closed down due to the Covid pandemic & found a way to continue to foster the love of sports in the lives of the kids they serve. Without the awesome programs offered here I can honestly say my kids wouldn’t have had the opportunity to try out different sports to see what would light a spark in them.I love how the staff here continues to try & introduce new activities for its members, from adding new sports to offering enrichment classes & fun events.CYC is worth checking out, as it offers so much to our youth & at such a reasonable price that you cannot find anywhere else. There truly is no other place like CYC.

I am a twenty-year-old who has attended CYC for over a decade. I came to CYC as a three-year-old after my family's social worker referred us and helped us get started. I started through the gymnastics program then went off to Boxing and finally ended up in cheerleading in which I found a love for the sport. As many know, cheerleading is a very expensive sport nationwide, so it was a relief to learn that CYC was a nonprofit organization that gets funds from donors. Coming from a low-income family this was something attainable for my parents. I witnessed a lot of my own friends pass away or go routes that I could've easily become part of. But CYC has been a great distraction and kept me from going through the wrong paths in life. Throughout my childhood, I never received the resources I needed to excel in different aspects of life. Growing up with dyslexia and high-functioning anxiety was hard and I wasn't able to get help in school. This led me to act out causing a lot of anger issues and anxiety attacks throughout my childhood. Thankfully CYC had plenty of resources that helped me cope in healthy ways. Something that really pushed me to change my ways of thinking were my coaches. If I did not have the grades that meant there was no cheerleading. Another thing they taught me was discipline in myself and to not dismiss my abilities. Thanks to the resources at CYC I was able to go from a 2.0 all the way to a 4.1 and graduate with honors thanks to the discipline and academic center that gave me tutoring. As many know tutoring can be very expensive and was surely something that my parents could not afford for me growing up, so this was a big help. I know you guys will probably read a lot of these but I cannot emphasize how much this place has impacted me. I went from someone who thought they were not meant for school and sports to someone who found peace and joy in something that I thought was not made for people like me. Through my time in cheerleading, I have gone to Disney World and competed at ESPN a total of three times. I have also gone to Vegas, southern California, and Arizona. I never even thought I would leave the Bay Area. To add to all the wonderful ties I have to this facility I have also been working at CYC for a total of four years and also coach cheerleading. I have found my love for helping youth and am now aiming for a bachelor's in Psychology and hopefully, a master's in Counseling.

Just talked to a lady over the phone to find a right sports activity for my son and she was very rude, un-supportive, toxic and not willing to share any useful info at all. It felt like she tried to hang up on me, end the conversation as as soon as she could, before allowing me to ask any other questions. So, from just a phone call and the way she spoke to me, you can easily realize that it is an UN-WELCOMING, toxic, and hostile place. DO NOT TRY TAKE your children to there.

My kids first time going to this center. As a new member I had a lot of questions and every person I spoke to to ask questions they made me feel really d*** like I should have known the answer. Now I’m stuck in a membership because I paid for the month. Definitely won’t be back next summer

The registration system could be better. Right now everything is manual with requesting classes from last week to the first week of the following month, but my kids got into many of the classes they wanted. I just love how affordable it is for the community to provide so many classes for kids to stay active and healthy!

Hello, I understand that you’re experience was less than satisfactory but honestly speaking, anytime CFS is called it’s because someone said something. Anyone working with children is a mandated reporter and is required to report when something is said (regardless of how big or small, that is up to CFS to decide). Yes, it does make life difficult for anyone who is a good parent but personally, knowing how things have gone down (example Gabriel Hernandez) I’d rather they report something that may end up being nothing than ignore something that could be something. As for the staff of CYC, I appreciate all they do and the effort they put in to get to know each child individually…our kids are not just a number to them.

I have been coming to cyc since I was three (i am 19 y/o) it was and is definitely a great alternative to keeping busy in sports instead of somewhere else getting in trouble. The coaches and staff are like family and I know I can rely on them with anything. Not only did I get the chance to compete and go to Disney world and travel, win championships with the cheer program (which was something I never thought I would have the chance to do)but also was able to have access to a computer and printing in the Academics room. Because of this establishment i found stability and healthy parental advice. This place has given me a safe place from my living situation and I will forever cherish CYC with my whole heart.

If you love your child or children then please do not bring them here. This place likes to call Child Protective Services on familys over the littlest things. They had called Child Protective Services on my family by 2 different gymnastic teachers. The ones that teaches the kids under 5 years old and yes I do know it was them. I have a friend that works there. This place has done nothing but create unnecessary chaos and Trauma for my family. My family will soon remove both of my nieces from this place.

Those who are taking care of the children are young people who are studying and opening the way to a new world and treat children well and get to know them as a family and of course help with meals so that our children have a place to be distracted and not be on the street.Thank youCarmen

This is the worst place ever , all of the staff aren't professional especially with dealing with customers. They don't have a system that you can rely on. They talk to parents with rudeness . Here is what happened. First, They didn't accept any changes in schedule for classes in-person, you should send them an email or give them a call which is fine , I followed their rules and accepted it , I sent them an email asking for a change in schedule for the class of my son , he originally goes 2 times a week, So I got confirmation emails with the 2 days for the new schedule "Wednesdays and Fridays". On Wednesday when he went to the class as usual they didn't let him in and told us that he is assigned for Fridays only . How come?!! He has been attending 2 days a week for almost 2 months. When I started asking more about that change , she brought her supervisor "a woman with dark skin colour wearing glasses" . I told her what happened, and to my surprise she was extremely impolite and rude, she kept yelling at me in front of my kid..., even when I told her I have confirmation emails from the place. She keeps saying it will be only one day and which day you prefer? the system is wrong , and it is automatic email , my son cried a lot because they didn't let him in this day and this is the second time for them to do that . They made him cry before for the same reason. The first time was same issue but we changed the schedule orally and the coach confirmed the change ,when he went there they did not let him play saying any change in the schedule should not be orally but it should be done online . and that what we did the second time and now they told us it is the system issue

Bad customer service, unreliable system, everyone of the employees does whatever he wants without any respect to the previous commitment with the parents or even child's engagement.

S/O to CYC ( Community Youth Center ) this is really a hidden gem. I encourage everyone to go get a tour ( bring your son/ daughter ) of the place and really see what's being offered. Their are done really exciting things going on at the center. Not just sports but in the classroom also as CYC offers tutoring in all subjects to help out kids that are struggling in certain subjects . I am happy to do this review as my little brother attends also, so I know first hand. Check them out !!
