Much more than a simple museum. A true encyclopedic exhibition of folk instruments and many unknown cases from all over the world. Unique in atmosphere and charm. For music lovers and beyond. Entering is equivalent to a real experience and not just a simple visit. Unmissable from every point of view!!

As a hanpdan/ percussionist player, this shop is top notch! I love walking in this place. Many instruments I have are from here. I recommend every musician to walk in this time capsule ?

yeah its true what the other neg reviews say: the local musician snobs all have an attitude here if you're not in their little minimum wage club. Its like the 50 year old dude who is still trying to be cool from high school, mediocre talent still stuck in a small town working a day job so they are jerks to anyone who doesn't want to throw their life away too.years ago I got some pick ups replaced, and they kept / stole the old ones.

Who DOESN'T love the Folk Music Center??This is one place we'll dearly miss when we leave California. There's nothing else like it anywhere, that we're aware of. It's one of a kind, eclectic, a very special place. My son is obsessed with the variety of folk instruments, especially the antiques. The owners and all who work there are wonderful, helpful, knowledgeable, caring people. Happy to exist on this planet at the same time as the FMC.

This place is a local gem - everyone that works there is so awesome, kind, and loves music. I brought my prize Tim Davis handmade custom banjo in for service. It's a one of a kind instrument with amazing tone, but it was buzzing all over the fretboard and no matter how I tried to adjust it (truss rod, coordinator rod, bridge height, head tension), I could not fully remove the buzzing without making serious intonation & playability sacrifices.I brought my banjo in and talked with David Millard first, and he methodically and thoroughly went over the issues I was experiencing with my instrument. He let me know that he'd have a look at the banjo, but that the shop's banjo expert, Henry Barnes would do all the work.Later, I called and talked to Henry over the phone, and I was really impressed with his depth of knowledge on banjo setup, and how quickly he was able to diagnose the issues with my banjo. It turns out that often, with handmade instruments, the luthier will send out the instrument without a full set up because shipping can sort of jack things up. So, I'd been playing for a year and a half on a half set up banjo.Once Henry had gotten to work on my banjo, we had another phone conversation where he explained everything that he'd been able to do. It turns out my banjo had some high frets that needed to be filed down, my fifth string pip was too high, the truss rod was out of whack, and the nut was too high. He fixed everything for an exceptionally reasonable price. When I picked up my banjo, I was blown away with how much Henry had improved it's playability. All of the issues I experienced were totally resolved. No buzzing anywhere. Barely any changes in intonation when I capoed or used my fifth-string railroad spikes. Amazing low action with no buzzing. Henry worked magic on my banjo, and now the playability is as good as the tone.It is so difficult to find a good banjo repair person - but I can whole-heartedly recommend the folk music center's Henry Barnes for all of your banjo repair and maintenence needs.I am a very, very happy customer. I wish I had found this place sooner!!!

This has got to be the COOLEST music store I've ever visited. The owners are amazing and the ambiance is magnificent. I would strongly advise any and everybody in the area stop by and say hello.

Check the other reviews - Very rude. Terrible service. Walked in to check out the string instruments. Got yelled at because it was open mic night. Not told, not asked, yelled at. First of all, the door was open and there was no rope or greeter. Secondly, came in as a prospective customer. Finally, it is never appropriate to treat people badly. Additionally, whatever live music they had sucked. We weren't trying to sneak in to their "awesome" concert. What a joke. Zero stars. Will not come back for instruments or live music. Ever. Shame on Ben Harper if he actually owns this place.

Location:Good, Parking : Okay, Service: knowledgeable, instruments: varied. Overall: First time stop and was amazed at the amount of unique instruments they had. Glad to see that this kind of place still exists when many have gone by the wayside. The area was not busy, so I can not rate as to how business is doing. I do wish this local seller continued success as it seems they have a decent clientele based on other reviews.

After considering various options, I decided to donate this broken Charango to you. I purchased it in Chiapas, Mx in 2006 after spending a month ethnography with the EZLN. I know you have the resources to restore it. Please enjoy.

Wasted my time coming here to try and sell instruments. Dropped them off and came back later in the day (40mi round trip) — they wouldn’t give me a quote over the phone or email and then wanted ME to tell them how much I wanted…I didn’t even know their worth. Flat out rejected the sale when I gave a number. Seems ridiculous. Sub-par customer service. Cluttered store. Better off just functioning as a museum.
