Carp lumber is the most complete, well stocked, knowledgeably staffed and reliable small lumber yard and nursery on the coast.

Nice to have a local hardware store to get little things for home improvement. Been a great spot when doing minor work on the house. Sometimes awkward with the cashiers, but good spot nonetheless.

I have lived in Carpinteria for 36 years and have frequented Carpinteria Valley Lumber many times for various things. I ALWAYS fear I will get the crotchety old man behind the counter to check me out. I try and be overly cheerful if I get him. However, I will not have to worry about that ever again, as my visit there last week WAS the last visit for me, my family members and some of my neighbors. I have a rodent in my condo and I desperately wanted to get some bricks to put at the bottom opening of the oven, and a trap. It was late in the day so I called the store and asked what time they closed. I was told 5:00. It was 4:45 and I live a few minutes away. When I got there it was 4:50. I said I needed a few bricks and a trap. I then asked if I could see a brick to see the size so I would know how many I needed. At that point Mr. Crotchety Counter Man said loudly over his shoulder, "I told you on the phone we closed at 5:00." I was a bit taken aback so I threw up my hands and walked out. I was furious to say the least, so went back in and told the old coot how rude he was and he repeated they closed at 5:00 (which it is now 4:55). He was helping another customer and he stopped to say "a brick is about this size" showing me with his fingers. I said some choice words to him and left. My point in this long explanation is to bring attention to "customer service". It maybe would have taken 5-10 minutes to get my bricks and trap and check out. Even if it took a few minutes longer would they have made me leave at 5:00 on the dot without my purchase? Customer service is customer service. This customer will never need service from Carpinteria Valley Lumber again! Can I get an "Amen"?

If I want to deal with rude and unhelpful people I'll just drive to Lowes. At least I won't be overpaying.

The guys at the front are not helpful and rude. So surprising given how awesome everyone in Carp usually is to each other. The kind of store that forces you to buy on Amazon versus supporting local. Only game in town, otherwise wouldn't consider going back.

Just purchased 50 feet (pre wrapped) nylon rope. Ended up being a little fatter than I need and took right back to exchange. With receipt, was unable to exchange for the correct size. "How am I gong to re-sell," was the response I got. Over-priced and shitty customer service, check. Love supporting local business rather than big box stores, but I'll never go back!!

Lumber quality was garbage. Bought 3/4" plyboard, they loaded it, got to the job site and noticed one side had bubbled from moisture and there was an area(2"×2") that they had wood puttied. I Had to trash the whole sheet. I always try to utilize small businesses as opposed to big box stores, but this makes me think twice. It's one thing to have some damage on an area, but to try to hide it with putty, that's trashy. I wouldn't recommend this store, in fact I'd tell someone to head to s.b. hardware

I've lived in Carpinteria for 6 years. I typically enjoy this type of an "old school" hardware store and it usually has what I need at a bit of an inflated price. I understand that and not really a problem but I am growing incredibly weary of the rude, older gentleman that either manages or owns the place. Either way, his attitude or demeanor is completely unacceptable. Sadly, he's the only one who seems to know where the products are located. Just don't ask for anything beyond that. Am I the ONLY one in Carp that gets this treatment or sees this?

Here is one of the traditional hardware/building supply community-based operations that seem to have an endless supply of everything that you will ever need. Great place to shop or just to visit and browse around for new ideas for DIY projects. Well-organized, pleasant facility with friendly experienced service staff on hand to assist as needed.

Good people, good vibe??! Old school lumber/hardware store for local people! Little bit more expensive than big box stores, but the convenience of being so local, moms and paps vibe feel is worth every penny!???The only thing- I needed 1"×3" and 2"×3" lumber, and they don't carry ?
