We always stop by Sanford's shop when we visit Carmel, it wouldn't be the same visit without him. Sanford is very knowledgeable about knives and the knife industry.

I live in SF and we come down to Carmel every couple of months mainly to eat, explore, hike, and shop. In the last few years I’ve made it a habit to go to see Sanford and get my knife sharpened. I’m an ex Army diver, a knife in my pocket is normal. I’d feel naked without it. I practice shooting at targets in my backyard with my bow, up in my tree. I know the value of a very sharp blade. Sanford is the best, ever! Apparently he likes me. He remembers my name, try’s to do the service and then not charge me. I know I’m dealing with someone who is good, and I’m thankful. I’ll be coming back until I can’t. Good spot!

Call before you go. Hours can be erratic since it is a one man shop. Great place, with a HUGE selection of cool tools

I had heard wonderful things about the knives and customer service, I drove an hour just to see what they had in store, I got there at 11:40 and it was closed, I re checked the online hours and it said it was open and closed at 5, big waste of time and won't be coming back, even stayed around the area for 20 minutes to see if they would come back, they didn't, ruined my day.

Well I won’t be stopping by here anymore. Came from Salinas to check out the shop. Stood there for about an hour and no opened up shop when it said it was “open”. Very disappointed

Honestly, buy your knife needs from here. Went in to buy my first ever pocket knife and was treated amazing by the older guy in the shop. Took the time to show me knives and explained to me the basics. Heck, even after I cut myself he gave me a band aid XD. Left with an awesome benchmade knife. Will buy here again sometime soon. Love my knife! Great people!

Absolutely a snobbish retailer. We went in looking to purchase some high end knives, but he was to concerned with a customer, to even acknowledge us. We stood and waited for at least 10-15 minutes and he never even looked at us or said one word to us. He saw us come through his front Dutch door, but that ended the contact. We were respectful not to interrupt his service with the other patron. We looked at the knives we were interested in, for several minutes, but soon realized he wasn't interested in serving us. I'm 73 years old and was there with my 44 year old son, ready to purchase several hundred dollars of his product, for Christmas. We had just had a wonderful lunch downtown and doing our holiday shopping. Don't patronize this shop, as he is very disrespectful to his customers, making you feel undervalued!

The shop has an excellent range of cutlery, especially folding knives. However, what really sets this stop apart is the people. I had the opportunity to speak to the owner, Steve, at length. His knowledge of brands, trends, styles, even knife steels is exemplary. And he's honest and straightforward. He could explain what makes a $400 knife worth the money while also explaining why a $40 knife might be as much as I'd need or want, and he'd be downright interesting to listen to the entire time. If you have any interest whatsoever in browsing for or buying a knife, it's worth it to visit this store.

TL;DR this place is great and Sanford will take good care of your knivesSo I'm in town visiting friends and every time they come back to our home state they stay with me. We have this thing where we try to one up each other with thank you gifts when we stay at the others place. Normally it's just a nice dinner or something like that but I got them this time.The last time they stayed with me we were making dinner and they just raved about my kitchen knives. Now mine are nice knives but they're nothing special. The only thing I could think at the time is theirs were dull. Lol and behold when I get down here the knives aren't just dull there are chips taken out of the edges. They looked more like the weapon a quirky protagonist uses in an anime than something that you should be using in the kitchen. Fortunately a quick Google search turned up Carmel Cutlery and when I called Sanford assured me that he could work miracles on the knives. For 20 minutes of my time and a very reasonable asking price he completely reset the edges and my friend is in the kitchen as I write this raving about how they cut like butter now. Can't say enough good things about this place. My only regret is they don't have a satellite shop back home in Minnesota

Took many years of dull blades in my kitchen before I discovered these guys. Excellent service -- got my knives back same day and way sharper than when I dropped them off! Highly recommend.

Was recommended by a friend. Sanford is the best. Sharpened my 13 knives and I brought in four steak knives and he sharpened on the spot for free. Bought a couple of small girly knives he is the best!!! Great selection of scissors too. This is the place!!! Wonderful. I made a new friend.
