5 stars for their varieties of hardwoods, 3 stars for their prices and phone help. If I'm after some zebrawood or purple heart or some other beautiful but expensive wood, I expect to pay premium prices. There's no better selection in the bay area. But you have to physically go to the store because you'll get inaccurate info on the phone; calling ahead doesn't help. And their high prices extend even to their plywood, so it makes them impractical as a one-stop shop. I love going to MacBeath, and on site help is excellent.

Stopped in today to pick up some 8/4 hardwood for an electric guitar build. The staff was super helpful, wide selection of hardwoods, and good prices. Will definitely be back again for the next project

Tally guys use lumber scaling rules that exaggerate the BF (by 30% for a board I was looking at today). For you nitpickers, the board was S2S, 1 3/4" thick, 8' long, exactly 4 inches wide (R2S). So we call it 8/4 material. But there is no convention for the width - this is hardwood. I got 5.33 BF. They said 7. (This is from doubling the read number due to it being 8/4, thereby doubling the error.) Board had a major flaw I said call it 5 BF how bout it. Manager said 6. Passed on the old don't-get-taken-if-you-can-avoid-it principle. Shortsighted attitude for a business but - much worse - fraud. Rules in hardwood are: you buy the actual rough equivalent BF.
Rich hobby guys or pros yawning and passing on costs must be rating this place. Btw, I first went in here >30 y/a and used to buy regularly.
[Moore Newton has somewhat better wood IME, much more of it, and the guys on the floor can use their judgement - and a tape! I've always found them very helpful with a great attitude.]

Employee yelled at me repeatedly after he almost hit my car with a forklift. They try to overcharge you when they calculate board feet. The lumber is never stacked well and the prices are outrageous, both on lumber and tools.

Excellent selection of exotic woods for hobbiests. I found some Gabon Ebony, some sapele and a little walnut. They also had dowels in various woods which impressed me. Prices seemed a bit high but maybe that's usual for the Bay Area.

Great experience with this company today. Went in a total newbie and the manager (or at least I think he is) walked me through all the types of plywood and we discussed my project and what would be best. Then he gave me a tape measure and let me browse undisturbed, checking in once to make sure I was good. Ended up buying a 1/2 sheet of baltic birch 3/4 ply. Cant speak to the prices, but I'll be returning for sure because of the service.

It's to bad that you can't go to this place without running in to a complete idiot who should be helpful and friendly. But nooo,,, I guess that would be asking for to much. This guy Darren I think that's his name.He was argumentative and rude to the point that I almost walked out. These young people don't know what customer is.i hope his manager recognizes him and sends him down the road.

This place is awesome. The monthly sales are a great deal and customer service is off the charts in terms of quality. Dylan was especially helpful, he even carried my plywood out to the car. Love this place!

Highest quality lumber, great selection, including rough sawn lumber in multiple species, and a good selection of tools, plus a helpful, knowledgeable staff. There's no place like it in the bay area - great for woodworkers. Miss the San Francisco location, but super happy Berkeley branch is still around.
