“as soon as i knew i was going to be in berkeley, the first thing i thought of was ”i need to go to sleepy cat books again!” :) it is simply the warmest and coziest little indie book shop that feels like being wrapped up in a blanket with a hot cup of coffee. if no one stopped me, i could spend hours browsing the impressive postcard and sticker collections, as well as the very skillfully curated staff pick tables! definitely a must visit if you are in the area and want to get a bit of an escape amidst all of life’s chaos as both the owner and lyla are very sweet and welcoming :)”
“A complete Islamic bookstore. Catering from the beginners to the advance level curious minds. Easy learning games for children, coloring Islamic books, prayer mats and more. A must visit for every Islamic knowledge seeker in Berkley, Oakland area.”
“Fun bookstore to browse! Lots of great finds, both new and old (nostalgic). The layout was confusing at first, with some books not in alphabetical order so it may take a bit of searching if you are looking for a specific book or author.”

1855 Solano Ave, Berkeley“Amazing customer service and overall shopping experience! Preschooler and I love coming here to browse. When I want something specific, they have special ordered titles for me, as well as transferred something that was out of stock from a different store — free of charge and with a very quick turnaround. I have stumbled upon many hidden gem type books via their sale racks.”
“This is my favorite book store in America. It is a very beautiful place and I love being here when I have a chance. It has so much good books and is like 5 floors of literary excellence. This is the creme de La creme of the Bay Area and it's book store's. This is a rare find and a nice honest place. I was going to head out to go to Moe's books one time during a social unrest and called because there was protests. I asked the worker if it was safe to come down. He told me don't do it, come next week will still be here. I thanks him and saved myself being arrested or harassed. Thanks”

3086 Claremont Ave, Berkeley“My husband and I have been science fiction readers since we were kids looking for stories to read. We've been happy customers of this shop since we discovered it, a very long time ago.Now we're thinkers, editors and writers, but those books and more are still there in this magical shop, waiting to jump out at more curious young readers like we used to be. In fact, there's a rumor that Santa sends his elves there every September to scout for new stories. Just sayin'...”
“HPB does a great job. This location has many treasures. The nice thing about used book stores is that if they don't have what you want, new books arrive later. Since this store is busy, new books arrive often.”

1401 Martin Luther King Jr Way, Berkeley“A light-filled spot with lovely books for little and not-so-little ones. We got several sweet books (e.g., Letters to My Grandchild) authored by Lea Redmond, and the warm storefront attendant Elizabeth wrapped beautiful gifts for the grandparents, who will definitely be delighted when they receive their care package. Thank you!”

3347 Martin Luther King Jr Way, Berkeley“Cynthia is always a pleasure to speak with because she’s a wealth of esoteric knowledge. I find myself lost amongst her books, crystals, oracle decks, incense, different types of tarot — you name it! Nowadays, I like to bring friends here when they are on an ‘energetic journey’ and need some encouragement from a master. Thank you Angel Light for all that you bring to our community!
P. S. I prefer her self published Crystal Blessing deck since the reprint changed (shortened) some of her advice. The publisher edition is good! Hers is GREAT.”
“Love Mrs. Dalloway's! I enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the shop. The managers and staff do a fantastic job of displaying book reviews and recommendations for you to choose. There's a great mix of newer releases and older classics. Pricing is fair on all their titles. Can't wait to come back and make another purchase!”
“Can't believe I've lived in Berkeley 10 years before discovering this gem. Don't be a dum dum like me. Especially now that they have a fill center, and all sorts of fun stuff, friendly staff, and good green living.”
“I went to this book store with my mom. I'm not into books, but my mom is a big reader. I think all the books are donated or they bought. My mom bought three books, just for $4.50. Really cheap books. That's my 5 stars.”
“A treasure on 4th street. Wonderful books and a great selection of gifts along with helpful, friendly staff. If you haven't been to this store, you need to go!”
“I always support small business and what I mean by that is a Mom&Pop shop. Not a multimillion dollar family business. Berkeley has 2 genuine comic shops and this is one of them. Formerly on Shattuck they are now only a few blocks down from University on MLK in a nice small quaint spot that means business. What is that you ask? Well one word Comics! New books every week! Some back issues hidden away for a more than fair price and even some grade-able gems. If ya do mums the word. Beware its comics so ephemera is not the focus. But some $1 dolla holla deals are to be had.”

1491 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley“Was in the neighbourhood for dinner with friends, and had some time to kill. We saw this near where we parked our car, and popped in for a quick visit. The bookstore was larger than expected! Had all genres of books and some gift products up front. I love the books with staff recommendation cards with them -- always great to learn about new stories! We were greeted by two friendly staff members. As my friend made a purchase, she was asked if she'd like to round up the purchase with a donation to books for local students in the Bay Area. What a great initiative! My friend said yes, and the two staffers gave a delightful cheer. I love shops that support the local community and clearly this was one such place! They also had a bulletin board for local events. Pricing is average but you can find some books for sale!”
“Very cute toy shop down this street. It's 2 stories and is decorated from top to bottom. Definitely a great place to bring your kids or just to look around if you just like cute things in general. They have gift wrapping here as well and there's some children's books on the top floor. Lots of unique toys that you generally won't find in big retail stores with a toy section, but they have some popular and familiar characters, brands, and series too (Minecraft, Sonic, etc.). Of all the shops down this street, I think this one stood out the most.”
“The Lawrence Hall of is an amazing place! Perfect place for kids to explore and play. Different aspects of science to appease whatever mood he's in and keep him engaged and curious. I love all of the hands on activities and fun ways to learn science concepts. It's not filled with a bunch of exhibits with reading and pictures only, but actual activities with included supplies or high quality displays to touch. Only thing I would change would the food selection. The cafe has been closed and the snacks in the gift shop are hardly foods that any responsible parent would give their kids (the most nutritious thing is a lunchable or protein pack with almonds and cheese). The rest are chips/candy/cookies. So bring your own lunch.”

2560 Ninth St suite 215, Berkeley“Alibris is great for what it is. New books sold by them are clearly marked. Otherwise, you are buying from independent sellers that use alibris as conduit. Some of those sellers are not great (HPB, for example). Alibris does not always make clear what version or edition of a book you are receiving from these third parties. Alibris has excellent prices and regularly offers significant discounts via coupons.”
“Popped in here on a whim while looking for the elevator to the parking garage and ended up spending a lot of time browsing around the store. Great selection of radical literature, and a wonderful selection of graphic novels dealing with heavy subject matters”
“This store has the best selection of Judaica and the owners are so helpful. It is such a pleasure to have a brick and mortar store where I can compare items. And around holiday times there is no better place to shop.”
