A wonderful store with an excellent selection of restored typewriters for sale. I really liked the variety of their collection. I went in thinking I would want a large Underwood, but fell in love with this portable Royal instead. Being able to type on them helped me immensely in finding the typewriter of my dreams. I will certainly be back!

Joe made us feel at home, literally, as he left us to type away from an enormous assortment of typewriters so that we could find the one we wanted to take home. We went with a chocolate brown Olympia SM3, and we're already using it for thank you notes, letters, etc. This shop is one of those magic spaces.

A must visit experience. Kenneth Alexander is so nice and so full of knowledge about typewriters. My brother took me there for my birthday and it was such a joy. I collect vintage typewriters, and my brother bought this beautiful Underwood Olivetti, Lettera 22 for me.

I was really excited to find this place and felt eager to support them. I have an old typewriter from who knows where that had been bashed on enough by various kids over the years it needed a tune up. I went in and was told it needed cleaning, ribbon, maybe repair but nothing obvious. Price was somewhat steep at $185 and pay in advance, but still happy to support the business. The guy who helped me was pretty critical, but oh well. They never called to say it was ready and when I called they were pretty rude about it. I went in and the guy scolded me for not having my receipt number at the time I called. I don't think they have any kind of system to keep track of orders, and since customers pay in advance, who cares.... Overall still happy this place exists, but can't say it was a pleasant experience. Think next time I'll just buy another typewriter off Facebook market place for $30

I don't appreciate being asked, "Why don't you want to fix it?" when I decline to pay $185 for a typewriter cleaning. Maybe that's the going rate, and that's fine. Just stop badgering me about "why" after I already politely decline.

I was gifted a Royal Quiet DeLuxe with stuck keys, a carriage that mainly returned whenever doing so seemed convenient, and all of the rubber on the platen was very cracked. In addition to all of the other issues, like a ribbon that din’t seem to move - Um.My Royal needed a bit of work. Now, this was some time ago, in 1993! When I was leaving California to strike out for college in another state, and of course, I had no real moneys to speak about, being a transfer student from California College of Arts & Crafts, and Berkeley fixed my typewriter and made it brand new! Well, made the machine work like the typewriter was new. They had shaved the platen, and cleaned and where necessary oiled whatever other bits there were. I teared up when I got it home, and I’m tearing up talking writing about it now. Thank you so much! I’m still using that Royal, though it’s obviously long overdue for a tuneup.

First I called several times to confirm that they indeed repaired printers since the name of the company is TYPEWRITER. I always got an old fashioned style answer machine. One time the machine was full so I could not leave a message. Another time I was able to leave a message but never got a call back. When I finally did get someone on the phone I should have taken a clue from his gruff attitude that this is NOT the type of owner I want to do business with. Nevertheless I lugged my Canon Inkjet printer down there only to have the rudest, most disrespectful experience I have had in recent memory. I told him "never mine" I'll take my business elsewhere and left in a huff. As I was leaving he yelled at me "you won't be able to find anyplace else that could fix it". I thought to myself, I would rather throw the printer away and buy a new one that to deal with this mean spirited, sad old man. Fortunately I went on Thumbtack and found Ricardo Ramirez. Not only did he make it convenient by coming to my place of business to work on the printer, he fixed it in less than 30 minutes! Total cost was $95. And he provided me with helpful tips to prevent the problem from happening again. I would never ever ever recommend coming to Berkeley Typewriter under any circumstances.

Helpful and knowledgeable at first found out about this from a small movie about how Typewriter's are disappearing, and went to the store, and was very pleasantly surprised. Helping save a dying art the free future will be written by Typewriter

Went over to buy a ribbon for my Olympia De Luxe, earlier this year while on vacation in San Francisco. It was installed, with instruction how to put it in correctly. It had been incorrectly installed originally (by me perhaps) causing the problems I was encountering. No upselling, just plain good old school service. Giving me the time, good customer service and history on my typewriter. I will be going up there soon to get a ribbon for my portable Smith-Corona.

This place is a real gem. Took me back to my childhood days of learning to type in school. Owner is very knowledgeable and helped me pick out a beautiful machine that I brought back to Colorado.
