Wasn't in search for pot, paan is what I got.Paan is an Indian post-meal mouth freshener & digestif. Paan comes in many variations, from salty to herbal, and is used in Hindu ceremonies. Made from the betel leaf, I wanted to expand my culinary profile & give paan a try.I've seen betel nut/leaf featured on the Travel Channel & other shows. Known for it's intoxicating effects (some say similar to a dram of whiskey), my research has led me to believing betel nut/leaf's intoxication occurs only when combined with slaked lime, for the absorption of the alkaloid stimulants. Plus, it causes the red staining of teeth. Unfortunately, the combination is carcinogenic, leading to tumors, especially oral. The man tending the store, the paan wala (paan maker), greeted me as I walked in. All the various toppings reminded me of an ice cream/frozen yogurt shop. $3 a piece, I wanted to try 2 types of paan, but the paan wala made me 2 meetha paan, before I could correct him.Meetha (sweet) paan-Coconut, candy coated spices & other accoutrement, wrapped loosely in a betel leaf, the meetha paan was akin to an after dinner mint, a spray of Binaca, and Chiclets all blended together. I could taste the aromatic blast of fennel seeds & cardamom upon first chew. I enjoyed the sweet paan, albeit a little too sweet, for my taste. Assuming I might feel an energy boost from the betel leaf, similar to coca leaf, I actually felt a bit tired. But, could be just me.Service was good. The paan wala was hospitable, and answered questions I had. There are a few parking spaces in front, with street parking also an option.Scratch off paan from my to-try list. While $3 does seem a bit much, and I can buy the topping ingredients from an Indian grocer, I experienced paan the authentic way - from a paan wala assembling everything together right in front of me. Not a treat I expect to desire often, I am intrigued in trying other types of paan. Knowing I have What-A-Paan local to me, I can always stop by and purchase a paan or two, whenever I choose.

I had made an order of 7 meetha paans over the phone. Meetha paan was full of supari when i said no supari in them. When I asked if there was gulkand in my paan, the man said yes but when I opened the paans at home only 1 out of the 7 paans I bought had it.

I have never been unsatisfied with any of the paan . Knowing preferred ingredients and quantities is a key to ensuring a good paan. The flavors and quality have always been excellent. I highly recommend trying paan for a satisfying experience.
