It's been years since I camped there, I always camped by myself but I did meet several good people and scouts there. I have a hankering to,go back but have to arrange transportation since I presently cannot drive, I don't mind carrying a backpack but have to re-assemble my gear, I have everything bitI have to plan ahead.

It's a shame they have closed the campground. Had a trip planned for 3 months that included Henninger and couldn't find anything online indicating it was now day use only. It wasn't until the sign on the gate during the hike inIt really is shame it is sitting unused. It's such a great place to go and camp for a night.Kind of a wasted asset.

As of 2023 January; Henninger Flats used to be a great place to do overnight camping, unfortunately the ranger station and the camp grounds are closed now due to the pandemic. You can still hike up here, but there won't be running water or a working bathroom at the top of the climb. The climb itself is a good workout, from the parking and back this is a 7.3 miles (round trip) hike, with a nearly 2600 ft elevation gain. The view is spectacular, the climb is tough. There are a few benches along the way you can rest at. The fire road is not maintained, some rock sliders and mud slides have damaged / blocked parts of the road, so bring hiking sticks and extra water if you are attempting this jaunt. Phone reception is spotty but even at the top of the hill in some direction you can still get 4g signal.

This is a great overnight backpacking trip. I went here for new years once and there are gorgeous views of the skyline. You could even see the disneyland fireworks going off. It is never packed except maybe on some popular holidays. Just a warning, though, it can be very cold and there are no cars only tent camping.

Good, challenging hike. Its about 2.9 mi if you go through walnut trail. Henninger Flats is well kept. Clean area, spacious, and has a great view. The nature center is pretty imformative. Has info about the wildlife in the area, relics and a bit of history.Picnic area: There are several picnic tables spread out the campground along with a few bbq grills.

Edit: Henninger Flats has apparently reopened, despite Ranger's stating that it would not reopen earlier this year.Henninger Flats is great. But FYI, as of March 9th 2022, the campground has been permanently closed. Not temporarily. Permanently. Great shame.

Patience is key on this one but the end is a breezy reward. The elevation is gradual in most areas which is tolerable, with a handful of steep corner turns as you go up. Going down, watch your balance as the decline can get sharp as well. This is rated a 3.5 hour roundtrip hike for 7.3 miles long. It's possible to take this in less time. The top of this location is also a campsite though no one was there at the time. A rewarding breeze wafts under the shade of the tall trees around you as you enjoy the view down to the San Gabriel Valley. On the downhill back to the start, we found there was a shortcut that was more steep as well and less traveled but clearly marked as a path. If you need to get back to the urban, this is the route to take. Would also recommend just having some type of map (google or apple maps) on your phone to make sure you're heading the right way back to the start. And bring plenty of water and wear lots of sunscreen, a hat and/or sunglasses, and a towel too for the buckets of sweat as well.

Eaton Canyon Waterfall, crowded. Henninger Flats, nice and peaceful. Winter is perfect time to hike up the bright open hills with great views of the LA Basin all the way to the Pacific

This is a truly underrated place to hike. On a clear day you can see all the way to both the skyline of LA and even the ocean. The trails are an easy hike for the most part with some great scenery each turn of the way all the way to the top. Have been many times and will continue to go often.

Hiked to Henniger flats from the nature center. Great trail but the campground looks pretty distressed. Hopefully someone comes to save it soon! Wonderful wide trails
